Greenland leaders say they WILL enter negotiations with Trump

Ekwutos BlogGreenland’s leader, Múte Egede, has expressed his willingness to engage in negotiations with President-elect Trump – although it won’t be over American potentially gaining control of the country.
Instead, the discussions would focus on the future of the mineral-rich Arctic territory, with a clear emphasis that Greenland’s people have no interest in becoming Americans.
Speaking at a press conference in Denmark on Friday, which holds nominal sovereignty over Greenland, Egede acknowledged the strategic importance of Greenland to the U.S. and said he was open to discussing areas of mutual interest.
While he has not yet spoken with Trump, Egede stated, ‘We are ready to talk. Cooperation is built on dialogue and finding solutions together.’
Egede was joined by Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, at the press conference.
The event comes amid an Axios report that Denmark officials have also communicated privately with Trump’s team ahead of his inauguration.
The secret communiques reportedly indicate the country’s willingness to explore how U.S. security interests could be addressed without transferring formal sovereignty over Greenland.
Greenland, a former colony of Denmark since the 18th century, became a self-governing Danish territory in 1953.
The island gained the right to declare independence through a public vote in 2009 — a move Egede strongly supports.
‘We have a desire for independence, a desire to be the master of our own house … This is something everyone should respect,’ he said. ‘Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic.’
Greenland’s importance has increased in recent years as melting Arctic ice opens new shipping routes, sparking competition among global powers for influence in the strategically located region between the U.S. and Russia. The territory and its surrounding waters are also abundant in valuable natural resources.
Currently, Denmark retains responsibility for Greenland’s defense.
The president-elect originally floated the idea of acquiring Greenland in his first term in office when discussing the prospect with his senior advisers back in 2019. But he left office without making any movement toward acquiring the territory.
Now, with less than two weeks before he begins a second term, Trump is revisiting the idea – and his son Donald Trump Jr. traveled to Nuuk, Greenland, on Tuesday with other ‘representatives’ of the incoming U.S. president.
At the time, former President Trump shared on Truth Social: ‘Don Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland. The reception has been great. They, and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and PEACE! This is a deal that must happen. MAGA. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!’
During the visit, Don Jr. stopped at a local eatery in Nuuk, Greenland, meeting with community members and putting his father on speakerphone to address the residents directly.
On the call, Trump remarked, ‘I just want to say, it’s a very special place. It needs security for itself, but also needs security, very much, for the world,’ Trump said through the phone.
Multiple politicians, including Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, sent a clear message to Trump: ‘Greenland is not for sale.’
Her remarks prompted Trump to cancel a planned state visit to Denmark on August 20, 2019.
But if it were, how much would it cost the U.S.?
Some have said the best comparison is looking at the U.S. purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.
Both Alaska and Greenland have cold, arctic climates, similarly scarce population density, strategic geographic placement and a richness of oil reserves.
The U.S. purchased Alaska, which is 586,412 square miles, for $7.2 million. In today’s dollars, that equates to around $153.5 million.
Greenland is about 150 percent the size of Alaska at 836,000 square miles. So by boosting that price by 50 percent, the total would come to approximately $230.25 million.
In examining past considerations for purchasing Greenland, history offers some intriguing comparisons. In 1946, the U.S. proposed buying the Arctic island for $100 million in gold, a sum that would equate to over $1.6 billion today.
Despite this valuation, both figures fall short of Greenland’s gross domestic product, which stood at $3.24 billion USD in 2021.
For further context, the U.S. bought the U.S. Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million in gold, equivalent to approximately $616.2 million today.
The Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803 cost $15 million, roughly $418.8 million in today’s terms. These historical transactions highlight the uncertainty around how much a Greenland purchase might cost, should such a deal ever be pursued.
The logistics of such a transaction remain complex. Under the U.S. Constitution, Congress must approve any allocation of funds for land acquisition.
Even with a supportive Congress, whether they would back such a proposal is unclear.
When reports surfaced in August 2019 of then-President Trump considering the purchase of Greenland, political leaders in both Greenland and Denmark swiftly rejected the notion. Some dismissed it as ‘completely ridiculous’ or a ‘joke.’

Strike: I’m not owning judiciary workers — Otti replies NBA

Ekwutos BlogAbia State Governor Alex Otti has reacted to the ongoing strike action by members of the Abia State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, saying that the union’s leaders have refused to credit the workers with over three hundred million naira released by his administration.
Otti, who spoke at Queen Elizabeth Chapel in Umuahia on Sunday during the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration service, said his attention was drawn to newspaper reports where the NBA had advised him to pay judiciary workers.
Otti, who said that his administration is not owing workers, explained that leaders of JUSUN refused to participate in a minimum wage negotiation organised by his administration but opted to prepare their own calculations in their office, which he said was discovered to be filled with errors.
According to him: “On the 24th of December, we remitted N283,242,318.50 to the judiciary.
“Interestingly, as of this morning, they have refused to pay their workers. Now, the judiciary is an arm of government that is independent. Our job is to remit the money to their account, and their job is to pay their workers.”
Otti said that he approved an additional N27 million for the judiciary workers and paid their thirteenth-month salary, wondering why they remained on strike.
The governor advised judiciary workers to hold their union leaders responsible and also advised the Nigerian Bar Association to properly understand the situation.
He used the church service to reassure the retired and serving men of the Nigerian Armed Forces that his administration would continue to support them.
In his remarks, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Legion, Commodore Ekekwe Duroha (retd), said surviving ex-servicemen and widows of retired officers should be assisted in this hard economic situation.

Delta Govt, APC in war of words over rumoured Gov Oborevwori’s defection

Ekwutos BlogThe Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the state government have resorted to name-calling.
The disagreement may not be unconnected to the speculation surrounding Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s rumoured defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to APC.
While APC stated that its party is “not a rehabilitation camp for failed politicians” and that it is uninterested in political opportunism or party affiliations driven by personal gains, the state government responded by claiming that APC is only attempting to survive through unintelligent propaganda, which it is currently engaged in.
A statement signed by the APC State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, described Governor Oborevwori’s tenure as being marred by underperformance, widespread disappointment, and an inability to deliver meaningful development to the people of Delta State.
The statement emphasised that while APC respects the right of individuals to associate with a political party of their choice, it is unconcerned about the governor’s potential defection, given his alleged lack of tangible achievements since assuming office.
While acknowledging the governor’s occasional praise of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s developmental strides, APC accused Governor Oborevwori of squandering Delta State’s resources, despite receiving over N50 billion in federal allocations monthly.
“Governor Oborevwori’s tenure has been marred by underperformance, widespread disappointment, and the inability to deliver meaningful development to the people of Delta State. Deltans are disillusioned by the glaring failures of this administration, and we remain steadfast in our mission to bring sustainable development through visionary leadership,” APC said.
However, Dr Ifeanyi Osuoza, the Delta State Commissioner for Information, reacted by saying: “The Delta APC is living in crippling fear of him, so we can understand why they have become sleepless and incontinent. They are only hoping to survive through unintelligent propaganda, as they are currently engaged in. Pitifully for them, e no go work.”

IPOB: We shall beg Tinubu to forgive Nnamdi Kanu — Arthur Eze

Ekwutos BlogBillionaire businessman Prince Arthur Eze has urged President Bola Tinubu to forgive the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.
Eze said that, unlike former President Muhammadu Buhari, who detained Kanu, Tinubu has a spirit of forgiveness and harbours no enemies.
Speaking with journalists in Enugu, the notable industrialist also stated that Tinubu means well for the Igbo nation, as evidenced by his recent actions regarding the Southeast.
Eze said these measures were an indication that Tinubu loves the Southeast.
According to Eze: “We need to thank the President for his concerns towards addressing the infrastructure gaps in the Southeast region.
“We have to thank Tinubu for establishing the Southeast Development Commission, SEDC.
“Remember, we have clamoured for this commission since the end of the Nigeria-Biafra war without success.
“It is only Tinubu who has demonstrated his love for us by establishing this commission. That commission will solve our problem.
“Nnamdi Kanu was detained by Buhari, not Tinubu. Buhari is a hardliner. But we shall beg Tinubu to forgive him. He has the spirit of forgiveness. He has no enemy.”
Kanu has been detained since he was rearrested in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition back to Nigeria.
Since returning to Nigeria, courts have dismissed all the charges against the IPOB leader, but the Nigerian government has refused to release him.
However, several relevant stakeholders in the Southeast have been clamouring for Tinubu to release Kanu.
Last year, the Southeast governors expressed willingness to meet with Tinubu in a bid to push for Kanu’s release.
