As IGP Calls on Citizens to Adhere to Rule of Law, Assures of Free Exercise of Voting Rights
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has ordered the restriction of all forms of vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation from 12 a.m. to 6 p.m. on election day in all states where elections will be conducted, with the exception of those on essential services such as INEC officials, electoral observers, accredited media and observers both foreign and domestic, ambulances responding to medical emergencies, firefighters, etc., during the upcoming 2024 run-off and bye-elections scheduled to take place across 26 states on Saturday February 3, 2024. The affected states include Ebonyi, Yobe, Kebbi, Lagos, Ondo, Taraba, Benue, Borno, Kaduna, Plateau, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Delta, Enugu, Jigawa, Katsina, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Kano, Nasarawa, Niger, Oyo, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
The IGP has also ordered a ban on all security aides to VIPs and escorts from accompanying their principals and politicians to polling booths and collation centers during the election. State-established and owned security outfits and organizations, quasi-security units, and privately owned guard and security outfits are also barred from participating in election security management.
The movement restrictions, including the ban on VIP aides, escorts, and state security outfits, are crucial measures aimed at preventing any undue interference or intimidation during the electoral process. The IGP emphasizes that these restrictions are implemented to safeguard the integrity of the elections and guarantee equal participation for all citizens of the affected states.
The IGP urges political parties, candidates, and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly and in accordance with the electoral laws, as any attempt to disrupt the electoral process or violate the established guidelines will be met with the full force of the law.

The IGP expresses confidence that, through collective efforts, the upcoming run-off and bye-elections will be conducted peacefully, transparently, and in line with the principles of democracy.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, strongly condemns the recent killing of two traditional rulers – HRM Oba Samuel Olusola Olatunji, Ph.D., the Olumojo of Imojo-Ekiti and HRM Oba David Ogunsakin, the Elesun of Esun-Ekiti in Ekiti State, and the abduction of school pupils and teachers in Emure-Ekiti. And has therefore taken immediate steps to address the security challenges in the region. To ensure the swift restoration of peace and order, the IGP has ordered the immediate deployment of Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Abiodun Asabi to Zone 17 Akure, along with additional personnel and assets.
The newly posted AIG has been tasked with overseeing a comprehensive and coordinated security response to bring an end to the unfortunate security incidents in Ekiti, and parts of Ondo State and ensure proper coordination among security agencies for optimum effectiveness in tackling the security concerns within Ekiti State.
The Inspector-General expresses his deepest condolences to the Government and people of Ekiti State, the families and loved ones of the deceased traditional rulers whose lives were tragically cut short during these incidents.
Preliminary investigations have led to the arrest of thirteen (13) suspects who are currently assisting the Police with the investigation process.
The Inspector General of Police hereby reiterates the commitment of the NPF to ensuring that justice is served, and those responsible for these heinous acts are brought to book, while assuring the public that every necessary measure will be taken to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
Members of the public are urged to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperative with the Police and other security agencies, as we work to restore peace and security to the affected areas.

Muslim leaders in Rivers State have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to review the emergency rule in Rivers State and reinstate suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s full authority.
The Muslim leaders emphasized that Governor Fubara has continued to lead the state effectively despite the political crisis.
They made the call during a visit to Governor Fubara at his private residence in Port Harcourt on Monday, as part of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.
The delegation include, Muslim leaders from 20 Islamic groups, including the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs.
Speaking on behalf of the Muslim Ummah, Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor assured Governor Fubara of their unwavering support.
He encouraged the governor to remain resolute, as believers are tested through wealth, power and authority just like it is contained in Islamic teachings.

Suspected kidnappers kill one, abduct another in Benue

Some gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have killed one person and abducted another person in Asa 2 area of Otukpo town of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The victim, Mr Onche Akatu, was said to have been shot at his home, while Mr. Ocheche was abducted while going home when he ran into the kidnappers,
The incident occurred at about 7:00 p.m. on Monday.
Ekwutosblog gathered that many residents were seeing fleeing the area to safety because of the frequent incident of violent killings and kidnappings in the area.
A source, who spoke under condition of anonymity said, “Mr Akatu Onche was gunned down by suspected kidnappers along Asa 2 area of Otukpo at about 7:00 pm on Friday.
“Unfortunately, he (Akatu) couldn’t survive the gunshots but died early morning on Tuesday.
“The kidnappers went further and abducted a man near the scene and whisked him to an unknown destination.”
Efforts to contact the spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, CSP, Catherine Anene, proved abortive as she did not return calls to her mobile telephone as of the time of this report.

Nigeria police rescue 21 kidnapped victims in three months

The Nigeria Police Force says it has rescued 21 kidnapped victims, arrested key suspects, and seized a cache of weapons and illicit funds in a coordinated series of raids in the first quarter of 2025.
This was contained in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Monday in Abuja.
Adejobi said the operations marked a significant escalation in the fight against criminal elements threatening the safety and security of Nigerian citizens.
The Force spokesman said most of the operations took place in Taraba State, where police operatives attached to the State Command spearheaded one such successful operation on 29 March 2025 along the Takum-Mararaba Road.
According to him, the operatives, in conjunction with other security agencies, swiftly responded to an ongoing kidnapping in Muji Town.
“A fierce gun battle ensued, leading to the rescue of 20 kidnapped victims, along with all the vehicles abandoned at the scene. Two of the victims who sustained injuries are currently receiving medical care.
“Meanwhile, in Kano State, a meticulous investigation was launched on 8 March 2025 following the kidnapping of Dr Muhammad Bello Yushau, which culminated in a series of arrests.
“On 18 and 19 March, technical analysis led police operatives from the state Anti-Kidnapping Squad to apprehend Tukur Lawal, also known as Maikudi, along with accomplices Ado Usman, Sanusi Surajo, Habiba Shuaibu, and Ummulkhairi Ibrahim.
“In their possession, authorities recovered a locally made rifle and N4,840,000 in cash, believed to be ransom money. The victim was rescued unhurt and reunited with his family,” he said.
