Senate President Godswill Akpabio has hailed President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructure drive which he says has transformed the nation’s capital and other cities in the country.

Akpabio said this on Wednesday during the president’s 2025 budget presentation to a joint session of the National Assembly.

“Notably, your infrastructure renaissance has paved the way for many roads, including the Coastal Road and crucial arteries in Abuja Capital City – imagine Abuja now looking almost like London — and other parts of our country,” the Senate president said.

“These developments are not merely about concrete and asphalt; they represent the lifeblood of our economy, connecting our people and fostering growth.”

Akpabio also raised concerns about ministers and other government appointees shunning the invitation of the National Assembly when summoned.

He said such a behavior is uncalled for.

“Those who disregard invitation by the National Assembly are not democratic and therefore have no place in your government,” Akpabio told Tinubu before a full house of members of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Akpabio re-echoed the need for the ministers and other government appointees to promptly honour invitations of the National Assembly to give an account of their stewardship.

He threatened to use the legislators’ “Constitutional powers to take further actions” against ministers, and others who fail to honour NASS invitations.

Tinubu presented a ₦49.7tn Budget Proposal presented before a joint session of the National Assembly.

Security and defence, infrastructure, health, and education were some of the sectors with high allocations in the budget proposal.

The President listed some of the highlights of the budget as defence and security – N4.91tn, infrastructure – N4.06tn, health – N2.4tn, and education – N3.5tn, among others.

The 2023 Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged party members not to fear anyone, stressing that Nigeria is in a state of collapse and urgently needs rescue.

He made this statement while addressing party members during the ongoing National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja.

“Do not fear anybody. Those who were afraid yesterday didn’t do any better,” Obi said. “We must speak out when things are going wrong. Nigeria is collapsing. The numbers are clear; the indices are clear—people are getting poorer every day.”

The former Anambra State governor stressed the need for unity and inclusion within the party.

“The Labour Party has chosen to be a family, and we must do everything as a family. It’s not about Peter Obi’s choice; it’s everyone’s choice. This family excludes no one. We want to build a party that is fair and just.

“We want to go into the next election fully prepared, offering Nigerians the best and most competent candidates for the House of Representatives, the Senate, Governorships, and the Presidency.”

He also emphasised the relevance of party loyalty and competence among aspirants, adding that they want to correct the mistakes they made in the past.

“Anyone seeking to contest under our party must be a committed member, not just someone passing through. They must be competent,” he added.

Lere Olayinka, the media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, described the House of Representatives member from Ideato North and South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Imo Ikenga Ugochinyere, as a political “Hushpuppi.”

Olayinka said Ugochinyere has been silent over the appointment of 23 administrators to preside over the local government areas of Rivers State.

Recall that the chairmen elected were suspended following the emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu in the state.

The emergency rule was declared due to the political crisis between Wike and Governor Sim Fubara who was also suspended for six months.

Amid the crisis with Wike, Ugochinyere has backed Fubara and the suspended administration in Rivers State.

However, Olayinka wondered why the lawmaker has been silent over the appointment of local government administrators.

Posting on X, Olayinka wrote: “We told Fubara that Ugochinyere is a Political Hushpuppi, he (Fubara) didn’t listen. Where is Ugochinyere today?

“Won’t Ugochinyere do Live TV Press Conference on this appointment of LG Sole Administrators and SIEC members in Rivers State?

“Abi why is @IkengaImo, Spokesperson of Opposition Lawmakers suddenly silent like this?”
