Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), is demanding compensation for the damage caused by the prolonged freezing on his accounts.
Human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner Omoyele Sowore has filed a lawsuit against Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB), seeking N100 million in damages.
The legal action follows the freezing of his accounts since 2019, which Sowore says is in violation of his fundamental right to property.
The suit was filed by his counsel, Inibehe Effiong Esq., at the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Lagos Judicial Division, with case number FHC/L/CS/ /2024.
Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), is demanding compensation for the damage caused by the prolonged freezing on his accounts.
According to court documents, Sowore opened accounts with GTB in 2015.
He accused the bank of freezing the accounts in 2019 without providing any valid reason or notifying him, thereby restricting his access to his funds.
The lawsuit asserts that this action constitutes a violation of his constitutional rights and has caused him significant financial hardship and emotional distress.
“The arbitrary freezing of my client’s accounts without due process is not only unlawful but also a blatant infringement on his fundamental rights,” stated Inibehe Effiong, Sowore’s legal counsel.
The activist is requesting the court to order GTB to unfreeze his accounts immediately and to award him ₦100 million in damages for the violation of his rights.
Sowore said, “Despite my demand letter, the Respondent has refused to lift the restriction it placed on my accounts neither has it paid any form of compensation to me.
“I state for a fact that since the restriction placed on my accounts, I have been unable to access the funds contained in those accounts.
“My inability to access the funds in my restricted accounts have also frustrated my business activities as I have overdue bills and expenses which I am yet to discharge.
“The Respondent’s restriction on my accounts has caused me huge financial embarrassment as on various occasions, I have had to borrow money from people in order to meet my day-to-day needs.”
The charge read, “A Declaration that the Respondent’s act of freezing and restricting the Applicant’s accounts with Account Numbers: (1) 0169510647 (Current Account); (2) 0169510867 (Savings Account); (3) 0169510850 (Current Account); (4) 0171422811 (Master Card/Visa Debit Account Type) and Account Name: Sowore Omoyele Stephen respectively, all domiciled with the Respondent; Guaranty Trust Bank Ltd is unlawful, unconstitutional, null and void and a breach of the Applicant’s right to property guaranteed by the provisions of Section 44 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and Article 14 of the African Charter of Human and Peoples Rights (Ratification And Enforcement) Act LFN 2010.
“An Order of this Honourable Court directing the Respondent to lift the restriction placed on the Applicant’s accounts with Account Numbers: (1) 0169510647 (Current Account); (2) 0169510867 (Savings Account); (3) 0169510850 (Current Account); (4) 0171422811 (Master Card/Visa Debit Account Type) and Account Name: Sowore Omoyele Stephen respectively, all domiciled with the Respondent; Guaranty Trust Bank Ltd.
“An Order of perpetual injunction restraining the Respondent whether by itself, its agents, privies/ or servants from unlawfully interfering with the Applicant’s accounts with Account Numbers: (1) 0169510647 (Current Account); (2) 0169510867 (Savings Account); (3) 0169510850 (Current Account); (4) 0171422811 (Master Card/Visa Debit Account Type) and Account Name: Sowore Omoyele Stephen respectively, all domiciled with the Respondent; Guaranty Trust Bank Ltd.
“An Order of this Honourable Court mandating the Respondent to pay to the Applicant the sum of 100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) as general damages for the unlawful freezing of the Applicant’s accounts with Account Numbers: (1) 0169510647 (Current Account); (2) 0169510867 (Savings Account); (3) 0169510850 (Current Account); (4) 0171422811 (Mater Card/Visa Debit Account Type) and Account Name: Sowore Omoyele Stephen respectively, all domiciled with the Respondent; Guaranty Trust Bank Ltd.
“An Order of this Honourable Court mandating the Respondent to pay to the Applicant the cost of prosecuting the instant suit.
“And any other order(s) as the Honourable Court may deem fit to make in the circumstance of the case.”
It continues, “I state for a fact that for years, specifically since 2019, all of the above-listed accounts which I opened with the Respondent have remained frozen, rendered inaccessible and inoperable by the Respondent.
“Up to date, the Respondent has not offered me any satisfactory and formal explanation in respect of the restriction it placed on my accounts.
“I have lodged several complaints yet the Respondent has refused to lift the restrictions placed on my accounts.
“I state for a fact that through my Solicitor, Iboroabasi Ntong, Esq. of Inibehe Effiong Chambers, I wrote a demand letter demanding that the Respondent lift the restrictions placed on my accounts and pay me compensation for the prolonged restrictions placed on my accounts which have incapacitated me from carrying out banking transactions and impeded my legitimate businesses and affairs.”
“The demand letter is dated 23rd April, 2024, and it was duly served on the Respondent,” he added.

But Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, speaking through her legal counsel Victor Giwa, said her comments were not made for political leverage but out of genuine fear for her safety.
The suspended senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has strongly responded to a formal petition filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in which she is accused of criminal defamation and incitement over allegations of an assassination plot.
But Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, speaking through her legal counsel Victor Giwa, said her comments were not made for political leverage but out of genuine fear for her safety.
“She has received the petition and has responded,” Giwa said. “What happened when she made that statement was her crying out to the general public to understand what she is exposed to.”
Giwa also criticised what he called a deliberate act of endangerment by Senate leadership, alleging that Natasha’s security details were withdrawn immediately after her suspension.
“You are aware that the Senate President ordered the withdrawal of her security,” Giwa noted.
“If somebody has committed gross misconduct, what has that got to do with the withdrawal of her security? She is a politically exposed person. You stopped her from entering the Senate, fine. But she has a life outside the complex. She is entitled to protection.”
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended from the Senate for six months under controversial circumstances earlier this year.
Ekwutosblog on Thursday reported that Senate President Godswill Akpabio had formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, seeking an investigation into an alleged assassination plot made against him by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In the petition dated April 3, 2025, Akpabio denied the serious accusation and called for the prosecution of Akpoti-Uduaghan for criminal defamation.
The petition, which was also copied to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), comes after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public outburst on April 1, 2025.
During a speech in Kogi State, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of instructing former Kogi State Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello to assassinate her in Kogi State, claiming that the act was intended to make it appear that her constituents were responsible for her death.
Akpabio categorically denied the accusation, calling it a “heinous lie” and a “reckless and deliberate attempt” to tarnish his reputation.
In his petition, the Senate President labelled the allegation as politically motivated, accusing Akpoti-Uduaghan of attempting to incite political unrest and damage his public image.
He stressed that the allegation was made without any supporting evidence.
The Senate President also highlighted the severe impact of the false allegation, especially given its widespread coverage across media platforms, including radio, television, and social media. He urged law enforcement agencies to treat the matter with the seriousness it deserves.
He said, “I write to formally bring to your attention and seek immediate investigation and prosecution of a criminally defamatory and malicious statement made against me by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a suspended member of the Nigerian Senate on the 1st of April, 2025 and which was widely publicised on radio stations, televisions and newspapers, including the social media.
“In the public outburst at Kogi State while addressing her audience, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan falsely alleged that I instructed the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to “assassinate her in Kogi State instead of Abuja” with the intent of making it appear that her constituents were responsible for her death.
“This statement is not only a heinous lie but a reckless and deliberate attempt to damage my reputation, endanger my life and security, and incite political unrest.
“I categorically state that this allegation is entirely false, unfounded, and politically motivated. It is a calculated act of blackmail and character assassination, designed to portray me as a political villain, and the statement was made without any shred of truth or supporting evidence.”
He further added that the statement was intended to manipulate public sentiment and malign his person and office.
“Her motive was clear, which was to incite the public, manipulate sentiments, and malign my person and office in the eyes of the Nigerian people and the international community,” he said.
“The severity of this false allegation, and the fact that it has gained public traction, makes it necessary that law enforcement agencies treat it with the urgency it deserves.”
In the petition, Akpabio called for the “immediate investigation into the false and inciting allegation” and the prosecution of “Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan under the relevant provisions of the law for criminal defamation, incitement, false accusation, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace”.
