The journalist regained his freedom on Friday evening, according to a statement by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), the organisation he founded.

Nigerian investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, has been released by the Nigerian Army following mounting public and media pressure.

Soyombo, known for his fearless exposés on corruption and abuse, was reportedly held by the military operatives in Port Harcourt earlier this week.

The journalist regained his freedom on Friday evening, according to a statement by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), the organisation he founded.

While confirming his release, the FIJ expressed concerns for Soyombo’s safety, citing fears of reprisals from Nigerian security agencies over his recent investigative work.

Soyombo’s detention was condemned by civil society organisations, and international media bodies, who viewed his arrest as a troubling attack on free speech.

The statement read, “We can confirm that our founder ‘Fisayo Soyombo has now been released by the Nigerian Army, following the intense media campaign you all mounted.
“FIJ acknowledges the Nigerian Army’s deliberate mischaracterisation to suggest an involvement in “illegal oil bunkering”. FIJ will also address this statement appropriately.
“Our immediate concern is regarding the safety of ‘Fisayo Soyombo in view of extensive information sharing with the Army on his fieldwork during the period of his detention. We are assessing the situation and hoping that his safety will not be jeopardised after release,” FIJ said.

Earlier, SaharaReporters reported that the Nigerian Army claimed that Soyombo was arrested alongside other suspects at an oil bunkering site in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.

Reacting in a statement made available to SaharaReporters, the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Lt Col Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, confirmed that Soyombo was being detained by the military, adding that its troops swooped on an illegal oil bunkering site, where arrests were made.

She passed away at about 11:33am on Friday, April 4, 2025 after battling illness.

Anti-human trafficking advocate, Yakubu Oyiza and her team had been raising money to bring her back to Nigeria for better medical treatment as hospitals in Libya rejected her.

According to Oyiza, documents for burial, autopsy, and land to bury her in Libya have been arranged, all costing approximately 350,000.

She alleged that the family abandoned her since she fell sick and had earlier refused to go to Kano and pick her up the day she was supposed to be brought back to Nigeria.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, April 5, Oyiza revealed that some family members of the deceased called them asking for Osas’ properties. African beauty products

“We sent 350k for her burial (to Libya) which they are still asking for more but guess what? Osas’ family is calling for us her properties.

Thousands of protesters gathered across the U.S. Saturday to object to Trump administration policies, including Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) federal downsizing, reciprocal tariffs and immigration reform.

More than 1,200 “Hands Off!” rallies took place in all 50 states, most prominently at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and state capitol buildings.

While most protests appear to be peaceful, there was a large police presence on standby as of 4:30 p.m. ET Saturday.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., spoke at the rally in D.C., saying, “We are winning every day,” citing recent legal actions against the administration.

“We are winning in court, where 39 judges appointed by five Republican and Democratic presidents have issued 56 preliminary injunctions and TROs [temporary restraining orders] against this lawlessness,” Raskin said. “Let’s tell MAGA what democratic movements all over the world tell the dictators of the world. Hands off the courts.”

He called the president an “economy-crashing dictator” who “knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

When asked about the protests, the White House said in a statement to The Associated Press, “President Trump’s position is clear: He will always protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid for eligible beneficiaries. Meanwhile, the Democrats’ stance is giving Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare benefits to illegal aliens, which will bankrupt these programs and crush American seniors.”

The National Park Service told Fox News in a statement it commends its employees, including its police officers, who “helped to ensure these events were peaceful and safe for community members and visitors alike.”

“In support of President Trump’s Executive Order, Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful, our dedicated Park Police officers promoted a welcoming environment, secured the historic monuments in our nation’s capital, and protected the First Amendment rights of all in attendance,” a National Park Service spokesperson wrote in the statement.

Large turnouts have been reported in New York City’s midtown Manhattan; Cleveland, Ohio; Philadelphia; and Lansing, Michigan.

Protesters held signs opposing the Israel-Hamas war, federal employee layoffs, deportation policies and the slashing of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs.

Anti-Elon Musk posters were also prominent, with DOGE coming under fire for its recent actions.
