Ford driver Mattias Ekstrom was fastest in the penultimate stage of Dakar Rally on Thursday, while Overdrive’s Yazeed Al-Rajhi took a decisive lead over factory Toyota rival Henk Lategan.

In what was the last major test of the 2025 Dakar, competitors had to traverse 275km of dunes through the famous Empty Quarters in Saudi Arabia before halting for the night at Shubayth.

Lategan entered the weather-delayed stage with an advantage of 2m27s in the overall standings, but a tough run for the South African swung the battle in favour of Al-Rajhi, who now looks set to take a maiden victory in the rally-raid.

Saudi driver Al-Rajhi, Ekstrom and Dacia star Nasser Al-Attiyah were in a league of their own during Stage 11, pulling almost 10 minutes clear of their nearest rivals by the finish line.

Five-time Dakar winner Al-Attiyah held the initial advantage in the new-for-2025 Dacia Sandrider, before Ekstrom pulled ahead at the 94km marker in his Ford Raptor.

Al-Rajhi took second in his customer Toyota Hilux and closed the gap to under a minute at around the halfway point, while Al-Attiyah dropped four minutes behind due to unknown reasons.

Al-Attiyah put in a mighty effort in the final part of the day to close the gap back up again, but Ekstrom held on to his position by 41s to take his fifth career stage win in Dakar.

The result secured back-to-back stage wins for newcomer Ford, with the Swede’s team-mate Nani Roma having triumphed in Stage 10 on Wednesday.

Al-Rajhi had held second place for much of the day, but fell behind a charging Al-Attiyah at the penultimate checkpoint.

However, third was still a solid result for the local favourite, with overnight leader Lategan ending up 10m23s off the lead in fifth, behind the other Ford of Mitch Guthrie Jr.

That means the 43-year-old is back at the front in the general classification, 6m11s clear of Lategan with just 61km to run in the final stage on Friday.

Ekstrom now looks set to finish on the overall podium for the first time in four attempts, having moved 4m16s clear of the chasing Al-Attiyah after Thursday.

Guthrie Jr has cemented fifth in the standings, with Century’s Mathieu Serradori likewise safe in sixth after finishing inside the top 10 on Thursday.

X-raid driver Joao Ferreira remains Mini’s highest-placed rider in the overall standings in eighth, behind Overdrive’s Juan Cruz Yacopini.

Amad Diallo inspired Manchester United to an epic comeback win over Southampton with a sensational 12-minute hat-trick.

The hosts were poor for most of the Premier League contest at Old Trafford, but the Ivorian came in clutch with a performance of the ages.

How Amad inspired Man United to victory

Man United went into the match high in confidence after two magnificent performances away against Liverpool and Arsenal.

However, it was another tepid performance at Old Trafford as they allowed their bottom team to dictate the majority of the game.

They conceded from a corner again, with Manuel Ugarte scoring an own goal from a corner. It looked like they were headed for another defeat at home, but Amad had other ideas.

A wondrous 12-minute display from the Ivory Coast international secured a much-needed win for Ruben Amorim’s team.

He scored his first goal in the 82nd minute to level proceedings. He bagged his second thanks to a deft chipped pass from substitute Christian Eriksen.

He capitalised on Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ error to become the first Man United player to score a hat-trick since Cristiano Ronaldo.

The win leaves the Red Devils 12th in the Premier League with 26 points after 21 matches.

What Amad said after Man United hat-trick

At 22 years and 189 days, the Ivorian became the youngest Man United player to score a Premier League hat-trick at Old Trafford.

“Maybe one of the best weeks in my life,” Amad told TNT Sports via MEN. “I am very happy for this win. This team deserved to win this game so I am very happy.”

“In football you have to believe. We believed until the end and are very happy to win this game.”

Amad will need to produce the same performance against Brighton, a much tougher opponent on Sunday.

New Match of the Day presenters announced

Spread the love

Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan will be the new Match of the Day presenters from next season, the BBC has announced.

It is the first time the role will be shared between three people.

They will split presenting duties for Match of the Day 2 on Sundays and MOTD: Champions League on Wednesdays, as well as Saturday’s flagship show.

Gary Lineker has hosted Match of the Day since 1999 and will do so for the rest of the season.

The former England striker will continue to lead the BBC’s TV coverage of the FA Cup next season and present the men’s World Cup in 2026.

Cates, Chapman and Logan will be the sixth set of main presenters for Match of the Day, which is the longest-running football show in the world having launched on 22 August 1964.

Last season, 33 million viewers tuned in across all Match of the Day Premier League and FA Cup programmes.

Former England players Alan Shearer and Micah Richards will continue as regular MOTD pundits.

BBC Sport director Alex Kay-Jelski said: “I know viewers will love these three incredible broadcasters and journalists at the heart of our football coverage next season.

“They’re brilliant at what they do and MOTD viewers can be sure they will be well looked after as the big football talking points are expertly analysed.

“Gary has done a phenomenal job at Match of the Day for the last 25 years, he’ll be missed greatly and we all still get to enjoy him on our screens across some of football’s greatest tournaments.

“Outside of Match of the Day we’ve got some great new shows, voices and surprises lined up for the 2025-26 season across audio, video and digital and we look forward to sharing them with you all later in the year.

“It’s a truly exciting time for BBC Sport’s football coverage.”

Meet the presenters

On sharing the role

“We are all friends and we’ve known each other for a long time and that’s a really lovely part of it,” said Cates, who will also continue to work for Sky Sports.

“Not only is it a great role just on its own but I’m sharing it with two people I really admire, respect and genuinely like. It’s a great set-up.”

Logan, who first joined the BBC in 2007, has stood in for Lineker on Match of the Day and presented many huge sporting events for the BBC, including men’s and women’s World Cups and European Championships, the Six Nations and Olympics.

“I think what’s interesting is although we’re sharing the role, we won’t actually be working together on Match of the Day,” she said.

“It’s really great to share it because we bring different experiences and different interests within the game. We bring different ways of broadcasting and that will mean our pundits are kept on their toes and share different kinds of analysis.”

Chapman has been the main MOTD2 host since 2013 and works regularly on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“People might find this hard to believe but there’s absolutely no competition between the three of us,” he said.

“We’ll do a mix of everything that works for us all as individuals, and all of us are really keen that it’s fair.

“This isn’t about the three of us, it’s about the three of us plus our pundits, plus our editors, plus our analysts and stats people and production people and radio people and online.”

On first MOTD memories

“Match of the Day was always on – I can’t remember a time without it,” said Cates, who is the daughter of Liverpool and Scotland legend Sir Kenny Dalglish.

“My earliest memory is of Des Lynam being on it. In fact there’s a Scottish version of Match of the Day and I was born just before it came on air, so my dad had time to get home and watch it in the evening. I’ve always had a good sense of timing when it comes to an evening highlights show!”

Logan, who is the daughter of former Wales and Leeds midfielder Terry Yorath, said: “When my dad was playing, it was the only way you could watch football on TV because there were very few live matches.

“That music would play every Saturday night because he would come home from work – playing in a match – and watch his match on Match of the Day. As a very little girl, hearing that music meant I was staying up late on a Saturday night.”

Chapman said: “My first memory of Match of the Day was in 1981 watching Manchester United play Ipswich at Old Trafford in the era when not every game was shown on the programme.

“I remember Gary Bailey being in goal for Manchester United and saving a penalty with no gloves on. I wanted to go and get in goal in the garden after that. I must have been seven.”

On what it means to host MOTD

Cates said MOTD’s status as an institution made it “nerve-wracking”.

“It’s something that’s so well-loved and so well-respected you don’t want to be the person that goes in and breaks that,” she said.

“I’m just very excited, I can’t wait to get started. I keep thinking about that moment I’ll be sitting in the chair and the music starts, and I can’t wait for it to happen.”

Chapman said “in many ways I’m not doing anything different to what I’ve done for the last 12 years”.

But he added: “I am excited about the variety that is going to come from the new role.

“I just can’t wait to be working with two friends, where we’ve grown up working together and we feel like a team. And to have some Sundays off.”

Logan – a rhythmic gymnast for Great Britain before going into broadcasting – described it as an “iconic show”.

She added: “One of the first things I did when I came to the BBC was fill in on Match of the Day and at that point when I was in that chair at the old BBC studio in London and hearing the music, it was a real hairs-on-the-back-of-the-neck moment.

“It’s always a real moment [sitting in the chair] because it has such history and it’s still so relevant to so many people now and talked about in a landscape where TV has changed so much.

“Everybody understands the history of the programme and the consistently huge audiences that watch it. It has more to offer as well – we know how strong the digital offering is and Match of the Day is really relevant to that audience too.

“There’s an enormous responsibility to make sure we continue to evolve while at the same time respecting the traditions of Match of the Day.”

Dakar 2025, Stage 9: Al-Attiyah fastest as Al-Rajhi grabs overall lead

Nasser Al-Attiyah bounced back from a difficult showing on Monday to claim victory on Stage 9 of the Dakar Rally, while a puncture for Toyota driver Henk Lategan promoted Yazeed Al-Rajhi to the overall lead.

Dacia’s Al-Attiyah and Ford rival Mattias Ekstrom initially duelled for victory in the 357km test between Riyadh and Haradh, with the two trading the lead in the first part of the day.

Qatar driver Al-Attiyah held the early advantage in his Dacia Sandrider before Ekstrom flexed his muscle to jump to the front 81km into the stage.

The five-time Dakar winner retook the lead at the following checkpoint and began to stretch his advantage in the second half of the day, pulling out a lead of over a minute with less than 100km to run.

As Ekstrom dropped further back, Al-Attiyah continued to chip away from his rivals, eventually reaching the finish line with a 2m47s margin over X-raid Mini’s Guillaume de Mevius, who moved up to second.

The Belgian stood third for much of the all-gravel stage on Tuesday, but leapfrogged Ekstrom at the 217km mark to secure his best finish of 2025 since his victory on Stage 6.

Meanwhile, Overdrive’s Al-Rajhi put in a solid performance in a customer Toyota to take third, demoting Ekstrom’s Ford to fourth place.

Al-Rajhi team-mate’s Rokas Backiuska rounded off the top five, ahead of the other Ford of debutant Mitch Guthrie Jr.

No factory Toyotas finished inside the top 10, as Guy Botterill crashed out at the 272km mark and Lategan suffered an early puncture that cost him seven minutes to fix.

The South African haemorrhaged more time later in the stage, eventually finishing 16 minutes back in 11th place – just a day after he had taken victory on Stage 8.

His troubles allowed Al-Rajhi to snatch the lead in the Ultimate class with just three stages remaining, the Saudi driver moving 7m09s clear at the top of the standings.

Ekstrom continues to hold third place on Ford’s maiden factory outing, with Al-Attiyah now less than a minute behind in the last-remaining Dacia.

Guthrie Jr sits half an hour adrift in fifth place, while Matthieu Serradori has strengthened his grip on sixth position despite a low-key outing on Tuesday.
