The Nigeria Police Force, as part of its intensified efforts to curb the illegal oil theft and economic sabotage in the country and in conjunction with the military and other relevant security agencies, has been in active liaison on intelligence sharing and collaboration with Private Security Contractors (PSCs) engaged by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) particularly Tantita Security Services.

The efforts led to the arrest of forty (40) suspected individuals and recovery of two (2) Vessels in two different interceptions at the Ogbogoro Oil Field, Brass Area, and Ekeni Area of Southern-Ijaw in Bayelsa State, for conspiracy, tampering with oil pipeline, illegal transportation of crude oil, dealing in crude and storing same without lawful authority or appropriate license amongst others.

The suspects were apprehended and subjected to investigation having established a prima facie case against them. They will be arraigned in court to face charges related to economic sabotage and oil theft which have been filed. Similarly, Vessels used in the illegal activities have been seized as part of the evidence against the suspects. Specifically, arraignment for suspects involved in the case of one of the Vessels is scheduled for 26th February, 2024 while the motion for interim forfeiture of the Vessel and products contained therein will be heard on 19th February, 2024.

However, preliminary investigations have indicted numerous individuals and companies including their foreign collaborators who will in due course be interrogated and caused to face the full wrath of the law.

The Inspector-General of Police has therefore urged the public to be vigilant and report all suspicious activities related to oil theft and economic sabotage to the NPF, in line with its mandate as enshrined in Section 4 (d) of the Police Act 2020 empowering the Police to enforce all laws without any prejudice to the enabling Act of other security agencies. The IGP stressed that the Police is committed to improved synergy with all relevant stakeholders including other government security agencies towards putting an end to the illegal activities of oil theft and economic sabotage in the country and will continue to intensify its strategies and operations to curb same, while not hesitating to bring to justice any individual or group involved in such illegal activities.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Imo State has condemned in strong terms the recent attacks by yet to be identified gunmen on the council headquarters of the Isiala Mbano LGA of the state where security guards were killed.

It also condemned the razing of Obowo LGA Divisional Police Headquarters, as well as the killing of a policeman in his house near NEPA junction in Umulogho community, also in the LGA.

In a press statement by its State publicity secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, he said, “Our party maintains that the continuous mindless attacks on public facilities and the killing of innocent citizens are unjustifiable and have no place in our culture and nationhood.

“We commiserate with the families and friends of the victims and, indeed, all Imolites who have been thrown into deep sorrow and anguish.”

Obiaku regretted that no mitigation was in place to checkmate the incessant attacks in the State, saying that the APC-led government of Hope Uzodinma should wake up to the occasion and stop being what it described as inactive and indifference to what is happening in the State.

The PDP publicity secretary further stated that the Governor has not been proactive in tackling the killings in the State, which he said had led to normalizing killings and arson, giving a leeway to attackers to have a field day in their operations, thereby turning the State into a theatre of war, bloodshed and sorrow.

“Amid this destruction and bloodbath, what we could hear from Gov. Uzodimma and Imo APC are stories of how they are having their secret primary elections as regards to the local government elections.

“Curiously, the same Governor, in a leaked video wherein he was addressing his APC lackeys over the said primary election in a closed-door meeting, claimed to be knowledgeable about everything happening in all the LGAs of the State,” he said.

Obiaku said that the governor “sits in an exalted position without doing anything and these attackers keep on snuffing lives out of innocent citizens”.

“To them, governance does not matter, lives can be lost, Imo can burn, and people can die of hunger for all they care,” he stated.
