Miss Adaeze Chinweoke, an SS1C student of Federal Government Girls’ College, Umuahia, whose tongue was partially bitten off by a fellow student in October 2024, has returned to school after a successful surgery at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia.

The student was attacked by a fellow female student, who bit off the tip of her victim’s tongue during a fight after breakfast.

The father of the victim, Mr Chinweoke Ofekwe, who accompanied his daughter back to school for the second term—the first time since the incident—shared their experience with journalists in Umuahia on Wednesday. He explained that the biting incident had affected his daughter’s health and strained the family’s finances.

According to him, apart from the efforts of the school principal, Mrs Ngozi Kalu-Idika, and two concerned parents, there was no direct financial assistance from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Abia State Government, the PTA of FGGC, or the school’s Old Girls’ Association towards their daughter’s treatment.

He attributed his daughter’s successful recovery to the grace of God and the professional expertise of Dr Innocent Iwegbu, a Chief Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, along with his team.

When contacted regarding Adaeze Chinweoke’s medical and health fitness prior to her return to school, and whether the incident could have any long-term adverse effects on her oral health, Dr Innocent Iwegbu confirmed that the young girl had recovered well and was stable enough to resume school.
