#FreeDeleFarotimi: Afe Babalola Obtains Court Order To Ban Farotimi’s Bestseller, Seize Royalties
The book has been a topic of heated debate due to its allegations of judicial manipulation and recently became a global bestseller in the politics category on Amazon platform.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an ex-parte order stopping the production and distribution of “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System”, a book written by human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi.
Ekwutosblog had reported that armed police officers arrested Farotimi at his office in Lagos State on 3 December, and took him to Ekiti, more than 300km.
On the following day he was arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti for alleged criminal defamation of legal luminary, Afe Babalola, SAN, in the book, “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System”.
The book accused Babalola of manipulating the judiciary to secure favourable rulings for his clients.
The allegations have not only attracted significant public interest but have also put the legal icon in the spotlight with growing condemnation for his use of the police to harass Farotimi.
However, the court order was requested and obtained by Afe Babalola, and demands that all sales and distribution of the book, both physical and digital copies, be stopped immediately.
In the suit No. CV/5372/24 filed before the court by Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAN, the Head of Afe Babalola’s law firm, and dated December 6, 2024, the Plaintiff also sought a directive to seize any royalties generated from the book’s sales.
The court granted an interlocutory injunction restraining Farotimi and all affiliated parties from further distributing the book.
The injunction read, “An order of interlocutory injunction restraining the defendant/respondent, whether acting by himself, his staff, employees, servants, privies, representatives, agents, publishers, distributors, sellers, re-publishers, re-sellers, or any other person however described including Amazon Online Bookstore, Rovingheights Bookstore, Booksellers Bookstore, Jazzhole Lagos Bookstore, Glendora Bookshop, Quintessence Lagos Bookstore and Patabah Books Limited from further publishing, selling, circulating, advertising, or distributing the physical/hard/digital/soft copies of the book authored by the defendant/respondent titled: ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’, online.
“An order of interlocutory injunction directing the seizure of all physical copies of the book authored by the defendant/respondent titled, ‘Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System’n wherever they may be.”
The legal move to block the book’s sale and distribution may be connected to its soaring global popularity, with critics and readers alike praising its bold exposé of Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
Meanwhile, distributors have stopped the sale of the book.
According to a source who demanded 10 copies of the book, he told SaharaReporters on Wednesday that he was told that henceforth the store in Abuja had ceased all sales of the book from their stores.
“Our attention has been drawn to an injunction sought against the sale of the book in bookstores sought by a SAN in Abuja in which our Company named was listed. Henceforth we have ceased all sales of the book from our stores,” the source quoted the text the vendor sent to him when he requested for the book.

A Nigerian woman, Ngozi, has said she would marry another woman for her husband if they are not able to have children after ten years of marriage and it’s been medically certified that the fault is from her.
She equally said that she will suggest getting pregnant by another man if the fault is from her husband and if he refuses, then the marriage is over.
Ngozi, who stated this in a Facebook post on Tuesday, said if one truly loves a spouse, he or she would want them to have a child even if it’s from another man or woman.
“10 yrs of marriage and no child…Medically certified the fault is from me, I will marry a woman for my husband or support him to marry another and then adopt a child of my own!!,” she wrote.
And if the fault is from my husband, I will suggest getting pregnant by one mgbada or everybody go find their way!!!

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to launch an investigation into the tragic death of 30-year-old Cynthia Oguzie, who was reportedly killed when an overhead water tank collapsed onto her apartment in the Lekki area of the state.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Safety Commission, Adewunmi Okoh, confirmed the development to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday during an interview about the heartbreaking incident.
Ekwutosblog reported on Wednesday that a short video viewed by our correspondent showed the victim lying motionless on her bed. However, a woman in the background could be heard insisting that she was still alive.
Another video captured the collapsed water tank and the wreckage of the building, while additional photos showed Cynthia Oguzie’s lifeless body in what appeared to be a hospital setting.
Oguzie had reportedly moved into the Lekki apartment just two months before the tragic incident.
A Facebook user who identified himself as the victim’s brother, Chukwuebuka Nathaniel, shared details of the incident on his page, blaming the tragedy on substandard construction.
“Beware of Lekki buildings and their water stands,” he wrote.
“This is how they sent my sister to her early grave. Thank you, so-called Lekki landlord, and your engineer, for doing this type of water stand,” he added.
Reacting to the incident, Mrs Okoh told our correspondent that the commission’s investigative team was prepared to be deployed to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation.
To facilitate the process, she urged the deceased’s brother to provide the exact address of the building, noting that it would help the commission trace those responsible for the tragic incident.
“We need details of the incident. We will escalate the matter to the DG. And the officers in charge will take the matter over. They will investigate the incident,” Okoh informed Ekwutosblog.
The commission, which was established to uphold public safety, has investigated several similar incidents in the past, including the case of a young man who died after jumping into a melting pot and has issued sanctions upon the completion of such probes.
Meanwhile, efforts by our correspondent to reach the bereaved brother, Nathaniel, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to him on Facebook had not been responded to as of the time this report was filed.

Public Procurement is a strategic enabler of national development, which contributes to economic growth through transparency, accountability, and efficient management of public resources.
The Director-General, Bureau of Public Procurement, Dr. Adebowale A. Adedokun, MCIPS, ACFE, stated this at the opening ceremony of the Procurement Clinic for all Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), at the UBEC Digital Resource Centre Abuja, on the Principles of procurement planning, Records keeping and E-Advertisement; A 2-day workshop for procurement officers, organized by the Bureau of Public Procurement to improve public procurement practices in Nigeria and ensure its alignment with international best standards.
Dr. Adebowale, in his remarks, appreciated His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for the opportunity given to the Bureau to carry out this scheme of procurement training. He acknowledged the management team as well as the organizers for their painstaking efforts to see that the program is well organized.
The DG reiterated the mandate of BPP under section 5 (k) of the Public Procurement Act (PPA) 2007, tasked with organizing training and development programs for procurement professionals.
Adding that, the essence of the training is designed to empower procurement officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to discharge their duties effectively. It is a platform for learning, collaboration, and reform.
He emphasized on the principles of procurement planning, which ensures that procurement activities are strategically aligned with organizational goals and, by extension, Mr. President’s “Renewed Hope Agenda”. Pointing out the need for proper documentation; the use of E-Advertisement Module for leveraging technology to enhance competition, transparency and access to public procurement opportunities; the use of Nigeria Open Contracting Portal (NOCOPO) for uploading procurement information and the efficient use of the New Revised Standard Bidding Document.
The DG reminded the participants and all procurement officers that Procurement in Nigeria has taken a paradigm shift, as transactional procurement is no longer viable, and BPP would not condone any infraction against this policy. BPP is strengthening its relationship with some of the Anti-Graft Agencies like ICPC, EFCC, NEITI, Code of Conduct Bureau, and NFIU through effective corruption free mechanisms
Therefore, all procurement practitioners should play a pivotal role in procurement processes to ensure that public funds are utilized effectively to deliver impactful services to the citizens. He encouraged everyone to use this golden opportunity to explore innovative ideas that will strengthen our collective resolves in upholding the principles of transparency, accountability, and professionalism.
