Group demands declaration of Aba North Assembly seat vacant, threatens protest

A group known as the Coalition of Aba North Ethnic Youth Groups has mandated the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emereuwa to declare the Aba North seat vacant in seven days.

The Aba North seat has been a subject of controversy since November 27, 2023, when the Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos sacked Destiny Nwagwu of LP and declared Aaron Uzodike of the PDP, the duly elected member to represent Aba North.

However, the seat has remained unoccupied since November 2023, as Uzodike of PDP has not been inaugurated by the Speaker, despite his several appeals.

A fresh controversy erupted Friday, as the Coalition of Aba North Ethnic Youths Groups, asked the Speaker to declare the seat vacant within seven days or expect a city-wide protest in Aba.

A protest letter signed by the leader of the group, Uka Matthew and some other members in Aba, said they have been without a representative in the Abia State House of Assembly for six months now and therefore, cannot continue to remain without a voice.

The Coalition also insisted that the March 18, 2024, House of Assembly election was won by Destiny Nwagwu of LP and not Aaron Uzodike of the PDP who won his case at the Appeal court.

Ukah Mathew threatened that members of the Coalition will protest in the streets of Aba if the Abia Speaker refuses to honour their ultimatum by declaring the Aba North seat vacant.

“We are calling on our brother the Speaker to do the needful and declare the ABA North State constituency seat vacant so that INEC can conduct a fresh election. We voted for Destiny Nwagwu, we cannot allow Aaron who lost even in his polling unit to represent us”, the group’s leader, Uka Matthew said.

Recall that a group of traditional rulers from the Aba North constituency last month, made a similar call by telling the Speaker to declare the Aba North seat vacant, alleging that Aaron Uzodike of the PDP was battling ill health.

But Uzodike, while speaking to Journalists in Umuahia in April, said he was healthy, sound and ever ready to represent his people if sworn in, even as he described the traditional rulers who made the call as imposters hired from other constituencies.

US: White House revokes order freezing federal grants, loans

The White House on Wednesday repealed a memo ordering a federal freeze on hundreds of billions of dollars in grants and loans, which triggered widespread panic among millions of people who rely on government aid.

This comes after a judge temporarily stopped the order on Tuesday, just hours after President Donald Trump signed it.

The judge halted the order until next Monday, after a group of organisations representing grant recipients filed the lawsuit.

According to the new letter issued on Wednesday, “the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Memorandum M-25-13, is rescinded.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, in a statement, said the administration was still pursuing a freeze.

“This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze. It is simply a rescission of the OMB memo, to end any confusion created by the court’s injunction,” she said.

DAILY POST recalls that earlier this week, the acting head of the White House budget office had instructed agencies to temporarily halt all activities related to obligations or disbursement of all federal financial assistance.

According to the White House, the move was intended to give the new administration time to assess which grants and loans aligned with their agenda.

However, the order sparked widespread confusion about which agencies and programmes would be impacted.

Responding to the latest move, Democrats shifted a news conference scheduled for Tuesday on Trump’s move to end birthright citizenship to condemn the freeze on all federal funding instead.

“What they’re basically doing is being lawless — to hurt families, to help their billionaire friends,” Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said.

He reiterated that Republicans would continue to attempt to block future funding, adding that they were only stopped because of the outcry from the public.

“I don’t think this would have happened, except for the outcry throughout America. And we in the Senate are working with our constituents to show that outcry. We’re going to keep fighting,” he added.

Schumer further stated that Trump should next revoke his nominee to lead the OMB.

DAILY POST gathered that the order was one of several Trump has issued since taking office, aimed at cutting the size of government and slashing federal spending.

Other orders target transgender rights and the automatic citizenship granted to anyone born in the US.

Nnamdi Kanu files N20b defamation suit against police spokesperson

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has filed a defamation lawsuit against Olumuyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The suit, filed by Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court on Tuesday, January 27, accuses Adejobi of portraying him as a terrorist leader in a press statement issued on January 25.

In the statement, Adejobi described IPOB as a “proscribed terrorist organisation” and stated that the Imo police command had neutralised six “notorious kingpins” affiliated with the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and IPOB. Kanu claims these remarks are false and have severely damaged his reputation.

According to the suit, the alleged defamatory statements were widely circulated and read by millions, including Kanu’s friends, family, colleagues, and followers in Abuja and across Nigeria. The filing asserts that the statements portrayed Kanu as a leader of a violent terrorist group, harming his character and prejudicing his ongoing legal cases in Abuja and other parts of the country.

Kanu is seeking a court order directing Adejobi to retract the statements and issue an unreserved letter of apology. He also requests that the apology be published prominently in three national newspapers: The Sun, Daily Trust, and Vanguard. Additionally, Kanu is demanding N20 billion in general and exemplary damages and an order preventing Adejobi from making further defamatory statements about him.

The IPOB leader further asked the court to compel Adejobi to cover the cost of the suit.
