Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, seized the opportunity at the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, AU, Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to urge the African Union Peace and Security Council, AUPSC, to prioritise the establishment of a combined maritime task force.
He said the move would enhance security in the Gulf of Guinea.
Tinubu stated that Nigeria is open to hosting the task force’s headquarters in Lagos.
He conveyed Nigeria’s position as the AU considered the report on the AUPSC, focusing on peace and security in Africa, as well as the biennial report on the implementation of the Master Roadmap of Practical Steps to Silence the Guns in Africa (2023–2024).
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, delivered the statement on behalf of President Tinubu on Sunday.
According to the Nigerian government: “The time is right for the African Union Peace and Security Council to prioritise the creation of a Combined Maritime Task Force for the Gulf of Guinea.
“I wish to announce that Nigeria would like to host the headquarters of the task force in Lagos.”
Nigeria’s recommendation for a maritime task force coincided with the signing of an agreement with the AU to provide Strategic Sea Lift Services for AU peace support operations, natural disaster response, humanitarian missions, and personnel movement.
The Nigerian Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar, signed the agreement.
Under the agreement, the Nigerian Navy will provide a vessel for the operations on a cost-recovery basis.
Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Naval Chief, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, and Director-General of the Nigerian Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Muhammed Muhammed, witnessed the signing.
Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, signed on behalf of the AU.
Tinubu welcomed the AUPSC’s decision to adopt the outcomes of a high-level meeting, including the upgrade of Nigeria’s National Counter-Terrorism Centre to a Regional Counter-Terrorism Centre.
He also commended the Peace and Security Council’s decision to renew the mandate of the Multinational Joint Task Force, which addresses the twin challenges of terrorism and violent extremism in the Lake Chad Region.
On Libya, the Nigerian leader expressed concern that instability in the North African country continues to exacerbate security challenges in the Sahel and urged the Assembly to support initiatives to restore law and order.
“The Sahel cannot enjoy peace as long as Libya does not,” he warned.

“I have come to the unfortunate realization that meaningful solutions are not being accepted by your administration,” Gwamnishu stated.
The resigned aide emphasized his commitment to the safety and well-being of Delta State communities, but lamented the lack of prioritization of insecurity issues.

US Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, has criticized President Donald Trump as he marks 100 days of his second stint in the White House this week.
Schumer said Trump’s first 100 days as president have been hell for the American people.
Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, 2025.
His first 100 days of his second presidency will end on April 29 (Tuesday).
However, in a tweet via his X account on Monday morning, Schumer said: “Donald Trump’s first 100 days as president have been 100 days from hell for the American people.
“His first 100 days have been the worst for any president in modern history.”
This is coming after Schumer recently hailed the decision by a federal judge to temporarily block the Trump administration’s efforts to rescind collective bargaining rights from employees at nearly a dozen government agencies and departments.

Tinubu pushing Nigeria toward economic ruin – PDP chieftain warns

Umar Sani, former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo and a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of implementing policies that are steering Nigeria toward economic collapse.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Sani alleged that Tinubu’s administration is pursuing a “state capture agenda” and working to entrench a one-party system at the expense of the nation’s economic and political stability.
Sani criticized several key policy decisions taken by the President, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies, the floating of the naira, and the hike in electricity tariffs, describing them as reckless moves that have deepened poverty across the country.
“On the very first day in office, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu demonstrated a startling lack of compassion for Nigerians,” Sani stated.
“He admitted that two crucial decisions, removing fuel subsidy and altering the exchange rate regime, were announced spontaneously from the podium after his swearing-in.
“He confessed it took great courage to make those pronouncements.”
According to Sani, the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira unleashed “skyrocketing prices and hyperinflation,” severely damaging the economy and impacting the daily lives of millions of Nigerians almost immediately.
He further faulted the restructuring of electricity tariffs into Bands A, B, and C, accompanied by steep price increases, arguing that the move has worsened the hardship facing ordinary citizens.
“The categorization of electricity consumers and the sharp price hikes have only added to the burden of an already struggling populace,” Sani said.
The PDP stalwart also pointed to the removal of subsidies on agriculture, livestock, and credit schemes, warning that these actions have “pushed more citizens into poverty and sparked protests across the nation.”
Highlighting mounting resistance to Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bill, Sani maintained that the policies of the current administration show a deliberate disregard for the welfare of Nigerians.
“The economic devastation we are witnessing today is a direct consequence of ill-conceived and hastily implemented policies. Tinubu is pushing Nigeria toward economic ruin,” he declared.
Sani concluded by urging Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist any attempt to undermine the country’s democracy or economic future.
