INEC to Legalise Voting Without PVCs in 2027 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is open to allowing eligible Nigerians to vote without Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in the 2027 general elections — but only if the law is amended to support the move.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, made this known on Wednesday. He emphasized that while the commission is committed to expanding voter access through technology, any change must be aligned with legal provisions.
This follows comments made by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, in December 2024 during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners. Yakubu had suggested that the exclusive use of PVCs for accreditation should be reconsidered.
“The commission also believes that with the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), the use of the Permanent Voters’ Cards as the sole means of identification for voter accreditation on Election Day should be reviewed,” Yakubu said.
He noted that voters could, in the future, use slips generated by INEC or downloaded from its website for accreditation — a move that would cut costs, ease logistics, and curb voter card-related malpractice.
“Those who already have the PVCs can still use them to vote, but going forward, computer-generated slips issued to the voter or even downloaded from the Commission’s website will suffice for voter accreditation,” he added.
Oyekanmi clarified that INEC supports the idea, but stressed,
“It is
not our stand-alone that is important. Equally critical is what the subsisting law says… the law needs to be amended to reflect it.”
The proposal, if passed into law, could mark a major shift in Nigeria’s electoral process by making voter participation more accessible and technology-driven.

Imo: Police officers face orderly room trial over alleged extortion, unprofessionalism
The Imo State Police Command has commenced an orderly room trial of three inspectors, one sergeant and three constables alleged to have engaged in unprofessional conduct, ranging from extortion to high-handedness towards members of the public.
In a press statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, it was stated that the trial followed the identification of the personnel by complainants, which led to their arrest and subsequent investigation.
He said that orderly room trial proceedings have therefore been initiated against the personnel, whose names were given as Inspector Eyo Udo of the Anti-Vice Unit; Inspector Peter Nweke of the Rapid Response Squad; and Inspector Ita Asuquo of Operation Search and Flush.
Others include Sergeant Chukwuka Ekwueme of the Anti-Vice Unit and the trio of Police Constables Onuwa Samuel, Patchris David and Amos Sunny, all of the Anti-Vice Unit.
“Notably, some of the personnel were captured in a viral video depicting an alleged extortion incident involving operatives attached to a Joint Task Force, JTF operation, at Seven-and-a-Half Junction, Obowo, including the other sister agencies whose personnel have been handed over to their various agencies for disciplinary action.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma assures members of the public that the disciplinary process will be thorough, transparent, and in accordance with the Nigeria Police Force regulations and the outcome of the trial will be made public.”
Okoye urged members of the public to continue to report acts of misconduct by police personnel via the Command’s Complaints Response Unit, CRU, on 08148024755, 08068923224 and 08134783532.

Denying your partner sex can lead to two years’ imprisonment for emotional abuse – Ghana Police ACP
Ghana Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Dennis Fiakpui, has stated that denying a partner s3x can lead to emotional abuse charges under Ghana’s Domestic Violence Act 732 of 2007.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Oti Regional Deputy Commander, revealed that women who refuse their husbands s3x could be charged for emotional abuse and when found guilty, jailed to a maximum of two years’ imprisonment.
He said the law is also applicable to men who may deny their wives s3x, encouraging such emotionally abused women to also lodge complaints with the police.
“If your husbands refuse to eat your food and make you unhappy and cause you emotional pain, you can also report it to the police and if your husbands come home late and cause you to be unhappy, you can make a case at DOVSSU,” he said.
ACP Fiakpui added that women who refused to give s3x to their husbands should equally be reported.
