Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that civil servants from level 1-14 would begin to work three days a week as part of measures to ease the economic challenges on residents.

He spoke during a live media chat, ‘Sanwo Speaks’, to intimate residents on steps being taken to reduce the economic burden on Lagosians after President Bola Tinubu ended the petrol subsidy regime and unified the exchange rates in 2023.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu explained that the state government is making arrangements for civil servants from level 1 to 14 to only work from their various offices three days a week.

He added that those on levels 15 to 17 will report at their offices four times a week.

“From next week, we are working out a plan where civil servants from level 1 to 14 will come to the office maximum of three times in a week,” the governor said. “Not that all forms of government will be shut down. It will be calendarised and scheduled. Those on level 15 to 17 will miss work for one day.”

Sanwo-Olu added that teachers in public schools in the state will continue to work five days in a week due to the nature of academic activities.

The Lagos governor said his administration will provide additional transport support for teachers in public schools.

He announced a 25 percent reduction in state-owned transport services starting from this weekend while adding that his administration will discuss fare reduction with transport unions.

Sanwo-Olu said the state will identify caterers and “mama put” outlets in each LGA to feed 1,000 people at least once a day.

He added that his administration will open “Sunday markets” in at least 42 identified markets for residents to buy food items at a 25 percent discounted rate.

Court frees boy who stood before Peter Obi’s convoy months after detention

The Magistrate Court in Apapa has freed the 17-year-old minor, Alabi Quadri, who went viral ahead of the 2023 general elections for standing in front of the convoy of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Quadri was wrongfully detained for months on a trumped-up charge of armed robbery. He was discharged on Wednesday, April 16, by the Magistrate court after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice found no evidence to support the allegations against him.

The teenager had been remanded at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kirikiri since January 26, 2025, following what his legal team described as a “diabolical frame-up” by the police at Amukoko Divisional Headquarters.

According to his lead counsel, human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, Esq., Quadri was abducted by two known area boys in his community — identified as Lege and Baba Waris, who had previously harassed him over donations he received during the 2023 election season.

“Quadri was returning from work when he was grabbed by these individuals, who have repeatedly threatened him for not sharing financial gifts he received. His family was even pressured by the Baale (community leader) to appease the area boys with a cow, rice, and a feast.”

Initially accused of involvement in a street fight, Quadri’s case took a darker turn when the police charged him with armed robbery and presented him before a magistrate. Shockingly, he was grouped with four adult suspects with no known ties to him. The police also falsely listed his age as 18 to avoid the scrutiny that comes with juvenile cases.

Effiong’s team became involved in the case last week after the matter was brought to public attention by Hassana Nurudeen, co-founder of Ray of Hope Prison Outreach. Following swift legal interventions, the court reviewed the DPP’s legal advice, which recommended that Quadri not be prosecuted due to lack of evidence.

Presiding Magistrate A. O. Olorunfemi (Mrs.) accordingly discharged Quadri, bringing a bitter chapter to an end for the teenager.

Chidinma Ojukwu, the prime suspect in the m#rder of Super TV CEO, Michael Usifo Ataga, today, April 17, recounted how she discovered Ataga’s lifeless body in a short-let apartment in Lekki on June 15, 2021.

Testifying before Justice Yetunde Adesanya of a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, the former 300-level Mass Communication student of the University of Lagos said she had returned from buying food and juice, knocked repeatedly without getting a response, then pushed the door open, only to find blood on the floor and Ataga lying motionless in a pool of blood.

“I dropped everything and rushed to him,” she recalled emotionally, adding that his eyes were half-shut and there was no pulse.

Led in evidence by her counsel, Mr. Onwuka Egwu, Chidinma recounted her relationship with Ataga, which began in November 2020. Chidinma mentioned that they met through a mutual friend, Fiyin, who was dating Ataga’s friend, James. She described Ataga as kind and supportive, claiming he paid her school fees and helped finance her cosmetics business.

According to her, Ataga who hails from Edo State and was residing in Victoria Garden City, had three children with his estranged wife based in Abuja. She told the court that on June 13, 2021, Ataga informed her of his upcoming birthday and invited her to spend time with him before travelling to Abuja for a family gathering.

“Due to ongoing renovations at his VGC residence, he suggested booking a hotel or short-let apartment in Lekki, where he had scheduled meetings,” she said

Chidinma stated that she found a short-let apartment at 19 Adewale Street, off Ologolo Road, Lekki, which Ataga approved. According to her, they met there that evening, went out to eat at Ango Villa restaurant, bought wine, and returned to the apartment to eat, drink, and smoke.

She told the court that on June 14, they woke up late and Ataga allegedly asked her to contact her supplier for ‘loud’ (cannabis) and rohypnol. She said he sent N15,000 for that and later N25,000 for food. She was out for about two hours buying meals due to COVID-related restrictions and delays. She mentioned that on June 15, Ataga requested more cannabis but asked her to pay since he was unable to transfer funds.

He also gave her money for food and juice. After a delay caused by a mix-up over the okro soup she was asked to buy, she returned to the apartment — only to be met with a horrifying scene.

“I saw blood stains, pushed the door open, and saw Michael on the floor, covered in blood. I checked for a pulse — there was none.”

In panic, she said she cleaned blood off herself, changed clothes, and packed her belongings, including a brown envelope containing Ataga’s bank statements, ID cards, and documents belonging to one Mary Johnson. She also took some jewellery before leaving the apartment in a cab.

The case was adjourned till April 28, 2025, for the continuation of the trial.

Belgian Teens arrested in Kenya with 5,000 Smuggled Ants

Two Belgian teenagers have been charged with wildlife piracy in Kenya after authorities found them in possession of 5,000 live ants packed in test tubes — a case that officials say highlights a growing trend in trafficking lesser-known species.

Lornoy David and Seppe Lodewijckx, both 19, were arrested on April 5 at a guest house in Nakuru County. During their court appearance at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Law Courts in Nairobi, the visibly distressed teens were consoled by relatives. They claimed they were collecting the ants “for fun” and were unaware that their actions were illegal.

Authorities said the ants, including the species Messor cephalotes — a large, red harvester ant native to East Africa — were being smuggled to international markets where they are sold as exotic pets.

In a separate but related case, Kenyan national Dennis Ng’ang’a and Vietnamese national Duh Hung Nguyen were also charged with illegal possession and trafficking of 400 ants found in their Nairobi apartments.

According to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the cases mark a shift from the traditional trafficking of large, iconic species such as elephants and rhinos to smaller, ecologically important creatures. KWS warned that the illegal export of ants undermines Kenya’s biodiversity and deprives local communities and research institutions of ecological and economic benefits.

”                                                                                                                                                                              The export of these ants not only violates Kenya’s sovereign rights over its natural resources but also threatens ecological balance,” KWS said in a statement.

The 5,000 ants were discovered in 2,244 test tubes stuffed with cotton wool, which allowed them to survive long periods during transportation. Kenyan authorities estimated the total value of the insects at 1 million Kenyan shillings (approximately $7,700), though prices vary based on species and destination.

Philip Muruthi, Vice President for Conservation at the African Wildlife Foundation, emphasized the ecological role ants play in maintaining healthy environments.

“Ants enrich soils, aid seed germination, and serve as food for various species such as birds,” he said. “When you see a thriving forest like Ngong, it’s not just the trees — it’s the relationships between organisms, from bacteria to ants to larger animals.”

Muruthi also cautioned that smuggling insects across borders risks introducing diseases that could damage ecosystems and agricultural industries in importing countries.

“Even if there is trade, it should be regulated. No one should be taking our resources without consent or control,” he added.
