The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has called on Nigerians to rise above hardship and draw strength from faith and community in this Lenten season.
Christians, especially those of the Catholic Church all over the world, observed the Ash Wednesday on Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the season of Lent.
In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN said the season invites reflection, renewal and recommitment for everyone seeking to pause and consider the direction of their lives and that of the nation.
CAN also noted that the period should be dedicated to making sacrifices, prayers and charities.
“For us in Nigeria, this season arrives amid challenges—rising living costs, insecurity, and daily struggles to put food on the table. Yet, Lent calls us to hope, urging us to look beyond our hardships and draw strength from faith and community,” the statement said.
“To the trader in Lagos, the farmer in Benue, the teacher in Kano, the driver in Port Harcourt, the student in Enugu, and Nigerians of all walks of life: Lent invites reflection on what truly matters.
“It offers a chance to release bitterness, share our resources with neighbours, and seek God’s grace for the journey ahead. Whether fasting from food or other passions, this season reminds us that we are united as one people under God, connected by our shared struggles and dreams.
“As Nigerians, we understand sacrifice and endurance. Lent resonates with the patience of mothers stretching meals, the courage of fathers toiling under the sun, and the faith of children praying for a brighter future.
“Let us use these 40 days to deepen our love for one another, pray for peace in our land, and work together for a Nigeria where justice and dignity prevail.
“I urge Christians to approach this Lenten season sincerely and invite all Nigerians—regardless of creed—to join in this spirit of renewal. Let us pray for our leaders to govern with wisdom and compassion, for our youth to find purpose and opportunity, and for ourselves to rise above division and build a nation we can all be proud of.
“May this Ash Wednesday mark the beginning of a transformative journey for us all. May God bless you and our dear country, Nigeria.”

The founder of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie, has claimed that Jesus Christ was at parallel with poverty.
Pastor Ibiyeomie said Jesus Christ never associated with the poor while he was on earth because he disliked poverty.
He disclosed this while speaking with his congregation.
Pastor Ibiyeomie asserted that the death of Jesus Christ and resurrection were not only to bring salvation but also to free believers from poverty.
He argued that remaining in poverty after coming to Christ reflects a lack of spiritual understanding.
Ibiyeomie said, “Jesus never visited any poor person in his house, check your bible. That means he hates poverty. He visited Lazarus, they were not poor, they were giving him food.
“He visited a sinner, Zacchaeus, who was rich. Tell me one poor man Jesus entered his house. He hates poverty, that’s the meaning.
“He hates people who are poor. He died for you not to be poor. How can you now come to church with some kind of mentality?
“You can come poor but you’re not permitted to remain poor. There’s nothing wrong with you coming to Christ as a poor man, but it’s wrong for you to remain poor. It is wrong.”

The Senior Pastor of Power World Ministries International, Rev. Dr. Uche Ume, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Mr. Kel Armstrong Amobi, host and producer of the KAATalks Podcast, over his claims that he was engaging in fake miracles.
The cleric demanded a full and public retraction of what he called defamatory statements made against him in videos posted on social media between April 8 and 9, 2025.
He spoke in a statement made available to Ekwutosblog through his legal counsel, Barr. Maxwell Opara.
Among other things, Amobi had claimed that, “There is nobody close to me that he hasn’t called, begging me to forgive him. But what he needs is to stop the staged miracles, false prophecies, and extortion.
“He is manipulating poor people in Ebonyi State, collecting money from children and their mothers.
“You’ve been ruining people’s lives with your so-called nonsense miracles and fake prophecies in Ebonyi, Aba, and other places. Do you know how many people may have lost their lives because of you?”
Rev. Ume’s legal team asserted that those statements were not only unfounded but had caused significant harm to his personal and ministerial reputation.
He said that failure to comply within 48 hours upon receipt of the letter, he would be left with no option but to explore all legal remedies available “to protect our client’s name and reputation.”
