MotoGP Japanese GP: Acosta scores maiden pole, Martin 11th after crash

Rookie sensation Pedro Acosta scored pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix as he set a new lap record at Motegi in the dying stages of a dramatic qualifying session that saw world championship leader Jorge Martin (Pramac Ducati) suffer a major setback.

While Acosta continued to look serene as he hunts for a first MotoGP win on his Tech3 KTM, Martin’s crash at Turn 9 in the critical final phase of Qualifying 2 meant he will only line up 11th for the sprint and Sunday’s grand prix.

That will be an opportunity for his main rival Francesco Bagnaia. The factory Ducati rider will start from second on the grid, despite a mistake on his final lap possibly robbing him of the chance to match Acosta.

Factory Aprilia rider Maverick Vinales will complete the front row, with Bagnaia’s team-mate Enea Bastianini set to start fourth.

KTM’s Brad Binder did not quite deliver on the promise set by his pace-setting Friday practice form, but will still have a chance to repeat his 2022 Motegi podium by starting fifth. He’ll take the start just ahead of Pramac Ducati’s Franco Morbidelli.

VR46 Ducati duo Fabio di Giannantonio and Marco Bezzecchi qualified seventh and eighth ahead of Gresini Ducati’s Marc Marquez. The Spanish legend had spent much of the weekend riding around various issues and looked to have conquered them as he took provisional pole in Q2, before his best lap was cancelled for a tiny track limits infraction.

Marquez’s brother and team-mate Alex completed the top 10 on the grid, with Fabio Quartararo(Yamaha) rounding off the third row behind Martin.

Earlier, despite very light drizzle, the track continued to get quicker as Free Practice 2 gave way to Qualifying 1.

Morbidelli sealed a spot in Qualifying 2 with a 1m43.746s lap that came close to the ultimate dry pace established by Binder on Friday.

The other rider to go through was Quartararo, who thus ensured there would be a Japanese motorcycle in final qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Aprilia) will line up 13th, ahead of a battling Jack Miller. The Australian looked close to dropping his KTM at times during Q1, his rear-end looking on the edge of control under braking. Factory Aprilia rider Aleix Espargarocompleted the fourth row.

Zarco pulled himself together well after his Q1 crash to set a time good enough for 16th. Alongside him at the start will be Joan Mir, the leading Honda rider at the manufacturer’s home track. Augusto Fernandez (Tech 3 Aprilia) rounds out row five.

Takaaki Nakagami was unable to deliver for his home fans in qualifying. The LCR Honda rider will line up 21st despite only narrowly missing out on a direct ticket to Q2 with his effort in Practice on Friday.

Nigeria seeks to host 2030 Commonwealth Games

Nigeria has formally expressed interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja.

The Nigerian Olympic Committee, NOC, made the announcement following an executive committee meeting held on 3 April in Abuja.

Ekwutosblog gathered that the bid can only move forward if it secures the official backing of the Federal Government.

In a statement issued on Monday by NOC’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Nezianya, the committee stressed that hosting the Commonwealth Games would offer a strategic platform for Nigeria to exhibit its strides in national development, improve its international profile, and deepen the culture of sports across the nation.

Nezianya described the bid as a unique opportunity to reflect Nigeria’s growth, elevate its standing among the community of nations, and inspire a new generation of athletes.

Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event in 2003, when the 8th All-Africa Games (COJA 2003) took place in Abuja. NOC noted that the success of that event demonstrated Nigeria’s capacity to organise large-scale international competitions and laid a strong foundation for future hosting ambitions.

A successful bid for the 2030 Games is expected to catalyse major investment in sports infrastructure, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory.

NOC further stated that such infrastructural development would not only revitalise the nation’s sports economy but also provide lasting facilities for future generations.

Beyond infrastructure, the hosting of the Commonwealth Games would offer substantial economic and social benefits. The anticipated influx of international visitors would invigorate local businesses and the hospitality industry.

Meanwhile, the planning and execution of the event would generate employment and foster the acquisition of valuable technical and organisational skills.

According to the committee, the bid also seeks to present Nigeria as a nation that values athletic excellence, inclusiveness, peace, and cultural richness.

The next edition of the Commonwealth Games is set to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from 17 to 29 March 2026. Glasgow previously hosted the Games in 2014, the same year Nigeria submitted a bid but ultimately lost to Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Africa is also poised to make history by hosting the Youth Olympic Games for the first time, with Dakar, Senegal, scheduled to welcome young athletes from 31 October to 13 November 2026.

Other significant forthcoming events include the Winter Olympic Games in Milano-Cortina in February 2027, the African Beach Games in Equatorial Guinea later that year, the 14th African Games in Egypt from January to February 2027, and the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles in July 2028.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has advised Alejandro Garnacho to consider leaving Old Trafford, should it facilitate Victor Osimhen’s arrival from Napoli in a potential exchange.

Manchester United are reportedly eager to secure the services of a top-class striker during the upcoming summer transfer window. The club has been strongly linked with Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli.

Napoli had expressed interest in Garnacho during the January transfer window but saw their offer rejected by United.

Speaking on his podcast, Ferdinand suggested that this could be an opportune moment for Garnacho to make the move to Napoli, thereby enabling Osimhen’s transfer to Manchester United.

“I would want him to play on the left wing at Napoli, with Osimhen coming the other way,” Ferdinand stated.

“Because Garnacho—if we didn’t have Amorim as the manager and instead had a coach who played with traditional wingers—I wouldn’t consider selling him. I like him. I love him.

“But if I’m Manchester United, Victor Osimhen must arrive at the club next season. I would make it happen. And the caveat is, if I were advising Garnacho, I’d tell him to go to Napoli.”
