Pakistan police arrest key suspect in gang rape of a woman polio worker

Ekwutos BlogMULTAN, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani police arrested the key suspect in the gang rape of a woman polio worker who was assaulted by three men during last week’s vaccination campaign, officials said Wednesday. Two other suspects are still at large.
The assault on Thursday in Jacobabad, a district in the southern Sindh province, was one in a spate of attacks targeting polio vaccination teams going door to door in the campaign across Pakistan.
The woman who was attacked had alerted the authorities, saying she was raped by three men after going into a house in Jacobabad to administer polio drops to the children there, local police official Mohammad Saifal said.
The suspect, identified as Ahmad Jakhrani, was arrested overnight, Saifal added.
Police are still seeking the arrest of the two other men, accused of taking turns to assault the woman, Saifal said. A local police chief was fired for negligence following the attack, for failing to provide the polio worker with adequate security.
The attack shocked many Pakistanis as such sexual assaults are rare, though women polio workers have complained of harassment in the past during the campaigns. The provincial government in Sindh has said it would fully investigate the case.
Police also detained the husband of the attacked woman for kicking her out of their home and threatening to kill her after the assault over allegedly tarnishing the family’s honor by being raped.
So-called honor killings, in which women and girls are slain by their own relatives for allegedly dishonoring the family’s reputation, are still common in Pakistan.
Saifal also said police have been deployed to the house where the woman was now staying with her relatives for her protection.
Anti-polio campaigns in Pakistan are regularly marred by violence. Militants often target polio vaccination teams and police assigned to protect them, falsely claiming that the campaigns are a Western conspiracy to sterilize children.
Since January, Pakistan has reported 17 new cases of polio, jeopardizing decades of efforts to eliminate the potentially fatal, paralyzing disease from the country. Polio often strikes children under age 5 and typically spreads through contaminated water.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only countries in which the spread of polio has never been stopped. Pakistan’s government is planning another polio vaccination drive in October.

Members of the Association of Resident Doctors, ARD, at the University College Hospital, UCH, in Ibadan have embarked on an indefinite strike, an official said on Monday.
The Association’s General Secretary, Dr. Uthman Adedeji, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Ibadan that the strike was due to power outages in some of the hospital’s residential areas.
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, reconnected UCH on Wednesday after more than 100 days of power outage.
The association had earlier issued a communique stating that members would embark on an indefinite strike if electricity was not restored by 4 p.m. on Monday.
Adedeji said that while electricity had been restored, only some parts of the residential quarters were reconnected.
“Arising from the just-concluded Emergency General Meeting, EGM, of ARD UCH, which was convened to appraise the current situation, it was observed that part of the residential quarters was reconnected. Some other parts were, however, left in darkness.
“In light of the prevailing circumstance, we are left with no other option than to embark on the earlier planned total and indefinite strike until all residential quarters are sorted (taken care of).
“We acknowledge the efforts of the UCH Management towards meeting our demand, but a lot needs to be done in order to guarantee uninterrupted service delivery.”
Adedeji assured that the association would regularly review the current imbroglio infringing on the welfare of its members.

Fear, concerns as Kano hospital turns ‘beehive’ of phone-snatching, other criminal activities

Reports from Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital (MMSH), one of the largest healthcare facilities in the country and the largest state-owned hospital in Kano, indicate that in recent times, insecurity has become a pressing concern in the vicinity of the hospital.
A post by one Ahmed Deedat laments that the presence of hoodlums in the area grows with each passing day, leaving patients, their relatives, and hospital staff vulnerable to phone snatchers and armed robbers.
Recently, a midwife working at the hospital fell victim to a violent attack by phone snatchers. She was injured and robbed of her phone. Similar incidents have been reported, with staff and patients’ relatives being targeted by thugs who snatch phones, bags, and other belongings at knifepoint.
In one incident last year, a doctor was threatened while attending to patients at her desk. In another one, a nurse had to crawl under a patient’s bed to evade attackers. These alarming events highlight the growing insecurity in and around the hospital. Many people have consequently called for urgent intervention by security operatives.
Although the hospital management has made efforts to enhance security within the premises, the problem extends beyond its walls. The surrounding area has become unsafe, compromising the ability of healthcare workers to provide effective services. Day or night, the fear of attack looms large, creating what can only be described as “thuggery with impunity.”
An investigation conducted by DAILY POST confirmed an escalating insecurity in the area which is a major threat to the hospital. However, a source from the hospital, who requested anonymity, said that most of the phone-snatching incidents occur outside the hospital premises.
“Recently, some thugs snatched a phone from one of our staff members known as ‘Dogara’ and even injured him with a machete.
“Even doctors have not been spared from these criminals. There was an incident where they stopped a female doctor, Dr. Fatima, and snatched her phone after her night shift.
“Nowadays, once it starts getting dark, people become anxious if they have a phone with them. The priority is to get home safely,” the source revealed.
DAILY POST contacted the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, but he did not respond to the several calls put across to his phone line.
Recall that in 2023, many people lost their lives to phone-snatchers in Kano. This prompted the state government to declare a state of emergency on phone-snatching in July 2023 and set up a committee comprising the police, military, NSCDC, and vigilante groups to tackle the menace.
DAILY POST tried to contact the Chairman of the Kano State Anti-Phone Snatching Committee, retired General Gambo Ahmed Mai’adua, but he couldn’t be reached on phone.
But a retired Captain, Abdullahi Bakoji who is a security analyst in Kano explained steps to follow to avoid falling victim.
According to Abdullahi, “people should avoid walking while using their phones, especially at night, and they should avoid getting into vehicles they do not trust and stay away from places known for phone snatching”.
