Pakistan police fires tear gas at protesters as anger spreads over alleged on-campus rape

Ekwutos BlogPakistani police fired tear gas and charged at student protesters who ransacked a college building Thursday, as anger spread over an alleged on-campus rape.
Tensions have been high on college campuses since reports about the alleged rape in the eastern city of Lahore went viral on social media, and protests have broken out in four cities so far.
The latest violence started when hundreds of students demonstrated outside a campus in the city of Rawalpindi in Punjab province. They burned furniture and blocked a key road in the city, disrupting traffic, before ransacking a college building. Police responded by swinging batons and firing tear gas to disperse them, police official Mohammad Afzal said. In a statement, police said they arrested 150 students on charges of disrupting the peace.
In Gujrat, also in Punjab province, a security guard died in clashes between student protesters and police on Wednesday. The police have arrested someone in connection with the death.
They also arrested a man who is accused of spreading misinformation on social media about the alleged rape and inciting students to violence.
Earlier this week, more than two dozen college students were injured in clashes with police in Lahore after they rallied to demand justice for the victim, who they alleged was raped on campus at the Punjab Group of Colleges.
Authorities, including the province’s chief minister and the college administration, denied there was an assault, as did the young woman’s parents.
Sexual violence against women is common in Pakistan, but it is underreported because of the stigma attached to it in the conservative country. Protests about sexual violence against women are uncommon.
Hasna Cheema, from the rights group Aurat Foundation, said neither Pakistani police nor the media were trained to handle such sensitive matters.
“They turn things from bad to worse instead of solving them,” Cheema said.
The Sustainable Social Development Organization said last month that there were 7,010 rape cases reported in Pakistan in 2023, almost 95% of them in Punjab.
“However, due to social stigmas in Pakistan that discourage women from getting help, there is a high chance that due to underreporting the actual number of cases may be even higher,” it said.
This week’s protests come less than a month after a woman said she was gang-raped while on duty during a polio vaccination drive in southern Sindhprovince.
Police arrested three men. Her husband threw her out of the house after the reported assault, saying she had tarnished the family name.

Ekwutos Blog- Passengers on a flight to Los Angeles were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime journey that seemed to travel back in time
- Their jetliner departed from Hong Kong on January 1, 2025, and crossed the International Date Line after six hours, reversing the calendar by a day
- Cathay Pacific Flight 880 touched down at LAX on December 31, 2024, at about 8:30 pm, a day before their departure date
In a journey that appeared to defy the laws of time, Cathay Pacific Flight 880 departed from Hong Kong on January 1, 2025 and landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on New Year’s Eve 2024.
ABC News reports that the flight took off from Hong Kong International Airport just after midnight on January 1, 2025.
How Cathay Pacific Flight 880 travelled back in time
Traversing the vast Pacific Ocean, the jetliner crossed the International Date Line about halfway through its 12-hour journey.
The crossing reversed the calendar by a day, allowing the plane to arrive in Los Angeles on December 31, 2024.
The flight touched down at LAX shortly before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, approximately 20 minutes ahead of schedule.
Passengers onboard effectively celebrated New Year’s Day twice, a rare temporal experience made possible by the interplay of time zones and international aviation.
Passengers love trans-Pacific flights to travel “back in time”
Passengers arriving at LAX were greeted with the festive hustle of New Year’s Eve celebrations, providing a unique end to their long-haul flight.
New York Post adds that this time-bending phenomenon is a regular occurrence for eastbound transpacific flights.
Over the years, passengers have been known to book eastbound trans-Pacific flights across New Year’s Eve to experience the holiday twice.
It highlights the fascinating quirks of global timekeeping, where a combination of speed, distance, and the International Date Line can seemingly transport passengers “back in time.”
December was dark month for airline industry
The drama-free Cathay Pacific flight gives a new lease of life to an airline industry that had a difficult ending in 2024.
In one of the worst airline disasters in recent times, nearly all 181 onboard Jeju Air Flight 7C 2216 died after it crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea.
Only two crew members miraculously survived and were rescued from the Boeing 737-800’s tail section.
