The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has once again cautioned former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who lost their seats after defecting from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Party urged these ex-lawmakers to refrain from actions and statements that could disrupt peace and governance in the state.

The PDP reminded the former lawmakers that, under Section 109 (1) (g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), they no longer hold membership in the Rivers State House of Assembly. Consequently, they lack the authority to convene or issue any notices to Governor Siminialayi Fubara as representatives of the Assembly.

This warning follows a recent seven-day ultimatum issued by these individuals from an undisclosed location, demanding that Governor Fubara re-present the 2024 Rivers State budget, which has already been passed and signed into law.

The PDP condemned this action, stating it aims to create a crisis and undermine the democratic and constitutional order in Rivers State, violating Section 1, Sub-section 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The Party emphasized that the former lawmakers, having forfeited their seats upon defection from the PDP—the platform through which they were elected—no longer enjoy the powers, rights, privileges, recognition, or obligations of Rivers State House of Assembly members.

In response to this subversive behavior, the PDP has called on the Inspector General of Police to take immediate steps to safeguard democracy, peace, and security in Rivers State.

The PDP also appealed to the people of Rivers State to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and united in their efforts to maintain stability, peace, and the continued delivery of democratic dividends under the PDP administration.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has said that members of the opposition are gathering in Abuja and other places with the intention of deceiving Abia people with fake news about his administration.

According to him, the members of the opposition have perfected a strategy to churn out fake and sometimes, real documents for propaganda purposes.

Otti stated this at Government House, Umuahia, on Monday while swearing in the Chairman and Deputy Chairmen of the 17 local government areas, together with elected councilors.

Otti, who did not mention the names of the opposition members, however, said that his administration was not afraid of such gatherings, as according to him, previous meetings held by such un-named persons failed and will fail again.

“Let me leave a word for the so-called opposition who are gathering in Abuja and elsewhere with the sole intention to deceive people and distract this government.

“They have perfected a strategy to churn out fake and sometimes real documents for false narratives and propaganda.

“Just like the Bible assures, because these gatherings are not of God, they will scatter. Do not take Abia people for granted.

“You have done this before and failed. What makes you think you will succeed this time given all the transformation that has happened in this state in less than 18 months? A word is enough for the wise,” Otti warned

In these difficult times, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed his gratitude to the European political community for supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russia.

He stressed that Ukraine needs not only diplomatic support, but also sufficient weaponry to defend itself against Russian aggression.

“We are defending ourselves not against Russian words, but against Russian attacks. That’s why we need sufficient weapons, not support in negotiations. Embracing Putin won’t help,” said Mr. Zelensky.

The president pointed out that some world leaders have been trying to negotiate with the Russian dictator for many years, but that this has only made the situation worse.

He said that the terrorists began incursion into northern parts of Sokoto and Kebbi States from the Niger Republic and Mali axis, particularly after the coup in Niger Republic.

According to him, before the coup, there were joint border operations with Nigerien security forces, which kept the terrorists at bay.

“The terrorists took advantage of the gaps in cooperation between both countries and exploited difficult terrains to make incursions in remote areas in some North Western states to spread their ideology,” he said

Buba said that the group was accommodated by the locals, who initially thought that the group meant well for them, adding that they failed to report the movement to the military and security agencies.

He assuranced Nigerians that the Nigerian troops have sustained intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) to degrade the terrorists. He added that the terror group had continued to take advantage of the vast under-governed areas to hide and evade troops as well as harass the locals.

According to him, troops are locating them and eliminating the threat.
