Senator Natasha: ‘It doesn’t matter where you’re from’ – Saraki slams Akpabio, clarifies ‘removal’ comment

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki has slammed the incumbent Senate President, Godswill Akpabio for saying he (Saraki) wants a Niger Delta person removed from the office of the Senate President.

Saraki said that the earlier call he made to Akpabio to ensure that transparent and open process was instituted to investigate the accusation levelled against him by one of his colleagues, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has been misinterpreted to mean an attempt to remove him (Akpabio).

Saraki made his points clearer in a statement signed by the head of his media office, Yusuph Olaniyonu.

The former national assembly leader urged the incumbent Senate President to read his press statement dated March 1st, 2025, very well to understand that there was nowhere he suggested the resignation of the Senate President.

Addressing some youth ethnic groups on Friday, Akpabio had claimed that certain individuals from Kwara and Adamawa States want him removed because he is from the Niger Delta region.

Saraki saw the remark as a way of politicising and trivialising a serious issue that threatens the integrity, credibility, and importance of the legislature, accusing the Senate President of creating a misleading impression of the issue at stake.

“Dr. Saraki in his last comment on the Akpabio-Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan crisis never called on the Senate President to resign or step aside,” the statement clarified.

He added: “rather, he urged the Senate President to be conscious of the fact that perception is reality and therefore he should avoid treating the allegations by the Senator in a manner that will create the perception that the Senate as an institution is trying to cover up issues bothering on sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and abuse of office.

“Also, Dr. Saraki made it clear that his intervention was neither about Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan nor whether her claim was right or not. He stated that since the Senator has gone public with such serious allegations against the presiding officer, the image of the institution should be saved through an honest, sincere, open, transparent, and unbiased investigation.

“In that press statement, he also pointed out that there are already existing processes recommended in the Constitution, laws of the land, Senate rules, conventions, and precedents to be followed in carrying out such investigation.

“Again, Dr. Saraki is of the firm belief that his suggestions are for the benefit of the legislative institution. So, he will repeat the same suggestion no matter where the Senate President comes from and whichever party he belongs to.

“It is not because the incumbent is a member of the APC, that the former Senate President is from the PDP or that the former is from the South-South zone while the latter is from the North Central zone. Far from it. It is disingenuous and crude to describe Dr. Saraki’s comment along those primordial lines.

“This issue is definitely not one in which Akpabio should exploit ethnic sentiments, political division, or regional proclivity. This will neither be in his own interest or that of the institution over which he is presiding. He should face the reality on ground and do what is right.

“The former Senate President believes that when a sensitive matter suggesting sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and mistreatment of women comes up anywhere, it evokes the pains that thousands of women across the nooks and crannies of our society experience daily. Thus, when it is raised in a place like the legislative institution, it is an opportunity for us to handle it with utmost openness and transparency to ensure that justice is not only done but glaringly seen to be done.

“Once again, Dr. Saraki stands by and maintains his earlier suggestion to Akpabio and the Senate leadership on the allegations raised by the Senator from Kogi State.

“An open, transparent, and honest investigation of the allegations is still needed to ensure that the Senate is not cast in the image of an institution that is tolerant of sexual harassment, gender bias, victimisation and mistreatment of women, abuse of office, and enthronement of the culture of silence.

“By having such an investigation, the general public and the international community will have more confidence in our legislative institution.

“People like Dr. Saraki have made huge sacrifices in defending the integrity of the legislative institution and will not desist in speaking up for the right thing to be done. May God bless our institutions and our country”.

Ekwutosblog reported that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had rejected a new sitting position allocated to her by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, dominated Senate.

The dispute then escalated when Natasha appeared on national television and accused Akpabio of sexual harassment.

The Senate President has since denied the claim.

Natasha was then suspended from the Senate for six months. During this period, the lawmaker is not expected to receive salaries for herself and her staff.

Her suspension on Thursday followed an official petition she submitted to the Senate on the alleged sexual harassment by Akpabio.

She was accused of violation of the Senate rules.

Abuja – Chaos erupted at the Nigerian National Assembly today as Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe took a dramatic stand, demanding the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu. The senator, who previously stood as a surety for Kanu’s bail, vowed that legislative proceedings would not continue until his demand was met.

Abaribe arrived at the National Assembly wielding a placard and blocking key access roads, declaring that “enough is enough.” He insisted that the prolonged detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader was unjust and against the rule of law.

“As a surety, I have always stood with Nnamdi Kanu, and I will continue to do so until justice prevails,” Abaribe stated. “From this moment, nothing will function in Nigeria until Kanu is released, as required by law. The Igbo people are not fools—we have been patient long enough. If President Tinubu insists on lawlessness, then let it be total lawlessness.”

Hungary drops veto and agrees to prolong EU sanctions on Russian individuals

Hungary has agreed to drop its veto and allow the renewal of the sanctions that the European Union has imposed on more than 2,400 individuals and entities, mainly from Russia, in response to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The resolution happened on Friday, less than 48 hours before the measures were set to expire, a risky deadlock that had put the bloc in a situation of extraordinary suspense.

Sanctions have to be renewed every six months by unanimity, meaning one member state can single-handedly derail the entire process.

Hungary’s veto was confirmed several times this week in meetings between ambassadors, with unsuccessful attempts on Monday, Wednesday and, most recently, Thursday afternoon. Each failure sent the clock ticking on.

Budapest demanded several names be removed from the blacklist, several diplomats told Euronews. The names were not made public, but Radio Free Europe previously reported the identity of seven oligarchs, including Mikhail Fridman and Dmitry Mazepin, and Russia’s sports minister as part of the request.

Following intense discussions behind the scenes, a compromise was eventually reached to release four names rather than the eight Hungary wanted. Additionally, three individuals who are dead were excluded.

As a result, the prolongation for another six months was approved on Friday morning. The sanctions were set to expire by midnight on Saturday.

The saga marks the second time in three months that Viktor Orbán’s government has put Brussels on edge by threatening to undo the sanctions regime that the bloc has painstakingly built since February 2022.

In January, it took exception to sectoral sections, which cover sweeping bans on oil, coal, technology, finance, luxury goods, transport and broadcasting, and the freezing of €210 billion in assets from Russia’s Central Bank.

Budapest relented after obtaining a non-binding statement on energy security.

This time, it set its sights on the blacklist that includes hundreds of military commanders, government officials, oligarchs, propagandists and Wagner Group mercenaries, all of whom are subject to an asset freeze and a travel ban.

President Vladimir Putin and his foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, are designated.

The blacklist also targets hundreds of Russian companies in the military, banking, transport, energy, diamond, aviation, IT, telecoms and media sectors.

Hungary argues that Donald Trump’s inauguration as US president and his efforts to strike a peace deal merit a rethink of EU support for Ukraine and EU sanctions on Russia.

The stance is not shared by other member states, who believe pressure on Moscow should continue for the duration of the war. They also want to pursue a “peace through strength” strategy to reinforce Ukraine’s standing in the negotiations and establish the country’s armed forces as an effective, long-lasting security guarantee.

Orbán disagrees with the “peace through strength” mantra and last week prevented the adoption of joint conclusions on Ukraine at the end of a special EU summit, forcing his fellow leaders to release an attached “extract” signed off by 26.

“Hungary has a different strategic approach on Ukraine,” said António Costa, the president of the European Council. “That means that Hungary is isolated among the 27. We respect Hungary’s position, but it’s one out of 27. And 26 are more than one.”

Leaving the summit, Orbán replied: “The European Union has isolated itself from the US, isolated itself from China because of the trade war, and isolated itself from Russia because of the sanction policy. So if someone is isolated here, it’s the European Union.”

The stark political divergence played out during the talks among ambassadors, with Hungary managing to block the roll-over on at least three separate occasions this week.

The veto happened the same week that US and Ukrainian officials announced significant progress in their negotiations, easing tensions between both sides.

Ukraine said it was ready to implement an interim 30-day ceasefire provided Russia reciprocated, while the US agreed to immediately lift the suspension on military assistance and intelligence-sharing with Kyiv, which caused consternation in Brussels.

“Ball is in Russia’s court,” said US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

In response, Vladimir Putin said he was in favour of the proposal but asked for certain “nuances” to be clarified before committing himself. Putin heavily implied that Ukraine should stop receiving Western weaponry for the duration of the ceasefire.

The European Commission has confirmed that it is already working on a 17th package of sanctions against Russia.

A prominent leader of the Arewa community in Lagos, Alhaji Abdullahi Dan Fulani, has officially defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing along his supporters.

He made this announcement during a meeting with the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, at the National Assembly in Abuja.

As part of his political realignment, Dan Fulani also declared the formation of a new political movement, Arewa Community for Barau Jibrin Maliya, aimed at consolidating northern support for the senator.

“In politics, you don’t wait for opportunities; you create them. Leadership is about direction, not just position,” Dan Fulani stated while explaining his decision to switch parties.

He emphasized that his move to APC was strategic and aligned with the interests of the Arewa community in Lagos.
