The Chief Executive Officer and National Coordinator of Service Compact with all Nigerians, SERVICOM, Mrs Nnenna Akajemeli has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on its deft and professional handling of issues involved in currency mutilation, racketeering and other instances of Naira Abuse.

She gave the commendation in Abuja on Friday, June 7, 2024 while on a courtesy visit to the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede at the corporate headquarters of the Commission.

According to her, the operational dynamism of the EFCC has succeeded in breaking age-long tradition of spraying of Naira notes across the country, “with the attendant effects of respect and dignity being accorded our national currency”. “ The EFCC has changed that aspect of our culture. Today, across the country, Nigerians no longer spray, staple, mutilate or do any dishonourable thing to the Naira. The symbol of our economy is now being respected”

Speaking on the purpose of her visit, Akajemeli said her team was in the Commission to seek closer and stronger collaboration and continued effectiveness of the Servicom Unit in the EFCC, stating that EFCC has done well in service delivery. She particularly applauded the Commission on its reception, investigation and interface with the public, pointing out that “ there are appreciable and noticeable improvements in the works of the EFCC”.
The Servicom’s boss pointed out that her agency, as the service delivery arm of government, would always monitor public and private institutions to ensure that Nigerians derive optimal satisfaction from them. She charged the EFCC to continue on its path of “excellence and commitment to global best practices in its operations”.
Responding, EFCC boss, Ola Olukoyede, represented by Director of Investigation, Abdulkarim Chukkol, appreciated the Servicom National Coordinator for her visit and understanding of the workings of the EFCC.

He assured her that the Commission, being a frontline anti-corruption agency, has a cream of professionals that continually adhere to Standard Operating Procedures in its mandate and with great respect for global best practices.

He particularly stated that the EFCC placed high premium on service delivery with the Servicom Unit as a vital Unit. Chukkol assured the team of EFCC’s continued adherence to the rule of law , stressing that Olukoyede is serious about doing things rightly.

“We handle and respect petitioners highly each time they come with their petitions. Some of the feedback you may be getting against us is when they want us to do what is not within our mandate or ambit of the law and when they don’t get it, they complain,” he said.

Ukrainian Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, denounced that the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant was “on the verge of a blackout” due to a new Russian attack in the vicinity.

Although Russia retains control of the plant, the minister said the attack had cut off one of the plant’s two main power supply lines.

Disconnecting the other line would suspend operations, jeopardize safe operating conditions and increase the risk of accidents, the minister warned in a message on his Telegram account.

“Such actions by the aggressor country pose a threat to the radiological safety of the entire region, and the return of control of the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant to Ukraine can guarantee its safe operation,” he added.

No comment from Moscow, but in this kind of situation it usually accuses Ukrainian forces of bombing the plant in an attempt to regain control by force. One thing is certain: the situation around the plant is extremely unstable. A few months ago, the International Atomic Energy Agency had already warned of the risk of a major incident.

Dozens killed and wounded in Israeli strikes across Gaza, medics and Hamas media say

CAIRO (Reuters) -Dozens of Palestinians were killed or injured in an Israeli strike on a multi-storey residential building in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya on Sunday, medics told Reuters.

There was no immediate figure for how many people were killed. The Palestinian Civil Emergency said around 70 people have lived in the property.

The Hamas-run Gaza government media office put the number of those killed at 72. The building housed members of at least six families, medics and residents said.

There was no immediate comment from Israel. It has often accused the Hamas media office of exaggerating the number of fatalities.

Video footage of the strike site obtained by Reuters showed locals pulling bodies from a huge pile of rubble, with surrounding houses also damaged, some heavily.

The Israeli army sent tanks into Beit Lahiya and the nearby towns of Beit Hanoun and Jabalia, the largest of the Gaza Strip’s eight historic refugee camps, last month in what it said was a campaign to fight Hamas militants waging attacks and prevent them from regrouping.

It said it has killed hundreds of militants in those three areas, which residents said Israeli forces had isolated from Gaza City.

A statement by the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad, an ally of Hamas, on Sunday said fighters blew up an Israeli army vehicle during fighting in Beit Lahiya. There was no immediate comment from Israel on the claim.

Earlier in the day, an Israeli air strike killed at least 10 people in the Bureij camp in the central Gaza Strip, when a missile hit a house, medics said. Four other people were killed in the nearby Nuseirat camp, they added.

Qatar has told Hamas and Israel it will stall its efforts to mediate a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal until they show “willingness and seriousness” to resume talks.

The two warring sides continue to trade blame. Hamas wants a deal that ends the war, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the war can only end once Hamas is eradicated.

The Gaza health ministry said 43,800 people have been confirmed dead since Oct. 7, 2023. Hamas militants killed around 1,200 Israelis that day, and still hold dozens of some 250 hostages they took back to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies.
