A recent United Nations report alleges that the Ugandan army has provided support to the M23 rebel group in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), while Rwanda has been accused of having “de facto control” over the group’s operations.

The report claims that 3,000-4,000 Rwandan soldiers have fought alongside M23 rebels and that Uganda has allowed M23 and Rwandan troops to operate on its territory.

Both Uganda and Rwanda have denied the allegations, with Uganda stating that its relationship with the DRC is strong and that it would not destabilize the region.

The DRC has called for the withdrawal of a regional force deployed to monitor a ceasefire with the M23, citing ineffectiveness.

The renewed fighting in eastern DRC has led to a massive displacement crisis, with the UN calling for sanctions against Rwanda for violating DRC territory.
