The media officer of the Rwanda Football Association, FERWAFA, Oliver Maurice, says it is important for the Amavubi to stop Victor Osimhen.
The 26-year-old has been in fantastic form for Turkish Süper Lig champions Galatasaray this season.
The forward has registered 26 goals and five assists in 30 matches across all competitions for the Yellow and Reds.
Maurice emphasized the importance of curtailing Osimhen.
“Osimhen is on fire, and we will try to stop him in this match,” Maurice was quoted as saying by SCORENigeria.
“Nigeria have top-quality players, but we’re not afraid; we only respect them.
“Nigeria have never won in Rwanda. We’re all excited ahead of this match, and our fans will troop out in numbers to support the team.”

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle has praised his players for their effort and adaptability in the win over Rwanda.
Chelle made a winning start with the Super Eagles with the visitors edging past the Amavubi 2-0 in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matchday five encounter at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali on Friday.
The Malian adopted what looked like a 4-2-3-1 formation for the game.
Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi featured in midfield, while the quartet of Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola and Victor Osimhen occupied attacking roles.
Chelle, however, admitted that more work still needs to be done despite his team’s victory.
“This is why I said I am proud of my players. Congratulations to them,” the 47-year-old said after the game
“We need to improve, I know that. This was the first game, so I’m happy for the win, but we need to go back to work.”
He also admitted that his team used two or three systems in the game.
“We have a team with strengths and weaknesses, my job is to think about the game and project,” Chelle added.
“My job is to tell my players it’s possible to play like that so this is a game we played two or three systems.”

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has showered encomium on Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman following the team’s victory over Rwanda.
Osimhen scored both goals as the Super Eagles beat the Amavubi 2-0 at the Amahoro Stadium, Kigali on Friday night.
Lookman, who is currently Africa’s best player, also registered an assist in the game.
Troost-Ekong declared that the duo are among the best players in the world.
”Victor Osimhen is a fantastic player I think he’s among the world best together with Ademola Lookman, Africa’s best player but I don’t want to single out anyone,” the Al Kholood of Saudi Arabia defender told reporters after the game.
“Today’s performance was a collective performance, we had a debutant Tolu (Arokodare), we had players who came on and played out of position like Alhassan Yusuf, so there was a team spirit which we had already before.”
The win over Amavubi was the Super Eagles first in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.
It was also the first time the three -time African champions will beat the Amavubi in Kigali in four attempts.
Troost-Ekong said they fought hard for the win.
“The game against Rwanda wasn’t easy, we’ve played them several times now and it’s a team we respect,” he added.
“We tried to understand what the coach wanted us to do early on, we only had two or three full training sessions, a lot of video sessions and today everyone saw glimpses of what we should be expecting under coach Eric Chelle.”

Rwanda vs Nigeria: Chelle revives Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup hopes in Kigali

Eric Chelle officially became the first non-Nigerian coach from Africa to manage the Super Eagles on Friday.
The Malian took charge of his first game – a 2-0 win in Rwanda in a 2026 World Cup qualifying fixture.
Chelle was appointed by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, on January 7 as permanent replacement for Finidi George and took over from the interim, Augustine Eguavoen.
Since then, he has spent three months travelling around Nigeria, watching domestic league matches, and communicating with his Europe-based players.
But his first team sheet was still confusing.
Chelle picked a heavily attacking line-up in Kigali, that seemed imbalanced on paper.
Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon all started in attack, while Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi manned the midfield.
“Well, I had two feelings. First, knowing that Eric Chelle managed Mali with a 4-3-1-2 set-up, I was very surprised with the team selection,” Ope Adebari, a sports analyst, reporter and producer with News Central tells Ekwutosblog.
“However, it is well known that some of our best players are wingers, so them playing is inevitable.
“Nevertheless, I did not agree with the team selection or formation as it has been tried in the past under Jose Peseiro and it did not work.”
That 4-3-1-2 at times morphed into a 4-2-4 or 4-4-2 formation depending on the state of play.
Although the Eagles showed their unfamiliarity with Chelle’s new ideas, they managed to outplay their hosts and go two goals up in the first, thanks to the in-form Victor Osimhen.
“This is the best I have seen this current squad play in a while,” Adebari admitted.
“It is clear that the players tried their best to execute the tactics of the manager while making sure that they secured the vital three points needed.”
One of the tasks Chelle has been saddled with, is to dig Nigeria out of the 2026 World Cup qualifying hole they find themselves in.
After four games and two coaches, the three-time African champions had recorded three draws and one loss, sitting in fifth spot in Group C.
“Mathematically, it is safe to say that the World Cup qualification is back on track,” Adebari said.
“Also, judging by the team spirit shown by the Super Eagles, it is clear that the boys are motivated to secure a ticket to be at the 2026 World Cup.”
This victory took them one position up into fourth, ahead of Tuesday’s home fixture against Zimbabwe.
Although the early signs were good, Chelle still has a lot of work to do with the squad, as he continues to mould them in his image.
“I’m sure he saw how flat and non-existent the midfield looked many times before the introduction of Raphael Onyedika.
“Also, Samuel Chukwueze clearly could not make an impact with the new role he was given.
“I believe Eric Chelle knows that we need to improve in the midfield aspect if we want to win convincingly against Zimbabwe and any other opponent going forward,” Adebari added.
