– May 2, 1945: Wema Bank was established as a private limited liability company under the name Agbonmagbe Bank Limited. It was the second indigenous bank in Nigeria.
– Colonial era: The bank survived during the colonial era, despite the lopsided and deprived access to finance at the time.
– Post-colonial era: The bank was renamed Wema Bank.
– 1987: The bank was converted to a public limited liability company.
– 1990: Wema Bank was listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange under the symbol WEMABANK.
– February 2001: The bank was granted a Universal Banking License.
– 2017: Wema Bank launched ALAT, Africa’s first fully digital bank, which acquired over 250,000 customers within its first year.
