The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Yusuf Maitama University, Kano, has sounded a warning regarding a potential conflict with the Kano State Government, citing negligence of their demands.

In a statement jointly signed by Branch Chairman Comrade Mansur Said and Secretary Comrade Yusuf Ahmed Gwarzo on Wednesday, the union highlighted three critical issues affecting its members: improving conditions of service, enhancing the university’s growth through sustainable funding, and safeguarding University Autonomy and Academic Freedom.

Expressing frustration over failed attempts to engage the state government, ASUU felt compelled to bring these concerns to public attention.

Regarding conditions of service, ASUU demanded the immediate payment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) totaling N178,705,735.91, as agreed upon in an earlier arrangement with the Kano State Government. However, no progress has been made on this front.

Additionally, the union called for the settlement of Consequential Adjustment Arrears amounting to N111,321,792.18 and implementation of the newly-approved Consolidated Universities Academic Salary Structure II (CONUASS II), a measure already applied in Federal Universities.

ASUU also urged the government to honor the provisional Wage Award of N35,000 for six months, which civil servants in the state have received but university staff have not.

On the issue of university funding, ASUU appealed for the completion of ongoing projects and supplementary funding for academic staff training, citing a historical challenge of insufficient budget allocations.

Highlighting the importance of University Autonomy and Academic Freedom, ASUU called for the prompt reconstitution of the University Governing Council, emphasizing its critical role in university administration as mandated by law.

In conclusion, ASUU appealed to the University Visitor to address these pressing issues to ensure industrial harmony and the smooth functioning of Yusuf Maitama University.
