At least 400,000 people trapped by Israel’s latest Gaza offensive, says Unrwa

Ekwutos BlogHundreds of thousands of civilians in Gaza remain trapped by the latest Israeli offensive centred on Jabaliya refugee camp, according to UN agencies and human rights groups.
“At least 400,000 people are trapped in the area,” Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN Palestinian refugee agency, Unrwa, posted on X on Wednesday, amid witness accounts of bodies lying uncollected in the streets because of the renewed fighting.
“Recent evacuation orders from the Israeli authorities are forcing people to flee again & again, especially from Jabaliya camp,” added Lazzarini. “Many are refusing because they know too well that no place anywhere in Gaza is safe.”
The Israeli military says the large-scale raid, now in its fifth day, is intended to stop Hamas fighters staging further attacks from Jabaliya and to prevent them regrouping.
Lazzarini said some Unrwa shelters and services were being forced to shut down for the first time since the war began and that with almost no basic supplies available, hunger was spreading again in northern Gaza.
“This recent military operation also threatens the implementation of the second phase of the #polio vaccination campaign for children,” he said.
Israel did not immediately comment on Lazzarini’s remarks. Israeli authorities have previously said they facilitate food deliveries to Gaza despite challenging conditions.
Despite a year of relentless Israeli attacks on Gaza, and intermittent declarations by the IDF and other officials claiming to have defeated Hamas, Israeli tanks and infantry attacked northern Gaza for a third time in force earlier this week, claiming the action was necessary to prevent Hamas “regrouping”.
Along with evacuation orders, the IDF has ordered the closure once again of several hospitals in northern Gaza, including the Kamal Adwan, Indonesia and al-Awda hospitals. The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights described the situation as “deja vu” on social media, adding: “We all know the horrors that follow such orders.”
Among those raising the alarm has been the international medical group Médecins Sans Frontières, whose staff described the situation in northern Gaza.
“All of a sudden, I was told that we had to move from the north,” said Mahmoud, an MSF guard, who left Jabaliya at night to find refuge at the MSF guest house in Gaza City.
“We left our home in despair, under bombs, missiles and artillery. It was very, very difficult. I would prefer to die than to be displaced to the south; my home is here, and I do not want to leave.”
Sarah Vuylsteke, an MSF project coordinator in Gaza, said: “The latest move to forcefully and violently push thousands of people from northern Gaza to the south is turning the north into a lifeless desert while aggravating the situation in the south.
“Access to water, healthcare and safety is already almost nonexistent, and the thought of more people fitting into this space is impossible to imagine,” she said. “People have been subjected to endless displacement and relentless bombing for the past 12 months. Enough is enough. This must stop now.”
The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and dozens of humanitarian facilities had been affected by the Israeli military’s latest forced evacuations across north, central and southern Gaza.
Between Saturday and Monday, evacuations orders were in place for several areas in the north of the Palestinian territory as well as areas in central Deir al-Balah and southern Khan Younis.
“There are growing risks that humanitarian access will be further constrained, particularly between southern and northern Gaza,” OCHA warned.

At least 18 people were killed in the latest Israeli military strikes on Gaza overnight, Palestinian medics said on Wednesday, including five children and two women. Two strikes hit tents for displaced people in the urban Nuseirat and Bureij refugee camps in central Gaza.
The bodies of nine people, including three children, were brought to the al-Aqsa hospital in nearby Deir al-Balah. An Associated Press journalist saw the bodies at the morgue.
In northern Gaza, an Israeli strike hit a family home in the Jabaliya refugee camp, killing at least nine people, according to the Civil Defence, a rescue agency operating under the Hamas-run government.
The dead were taken to the al-Ahli hospital, which said two women and two children were among those killed. Footage shared by the Civil Defence showed first responders recovering dead bodies and body parts from under the rubble.
The latest deaths brought the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza by Israeli operations since October 2023 to 42,010 with a further 97,720 injured, according to Gaza’s ministry of health.

A Nigerian woman, Ngozi, has said she would marry another woman for her husband if they are not able to have children after ten years of marriage and it’s been medically certified that the fault is from her.
She equally said that she will suggest getting pregnant by another man if the fault is from her husband and if he refuses, then the marriage is over.
Ngozi, who stated this in a Facebook post on Tuesday, said if one truly loves a spouse, he or she would want them to have a child even if it’s from another man or woman.
“10 yrs of marriage and no child…Medically certified the fault is from me, I will marry a woman for my husband or support him to marry another and then adopt a child of my own!!,” she wrote.
And if the fault is from my husband, I will suggest getting pregnant by one mgbada or everybody go find their way!!!

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to launch an investigation into the tragic death of 30-year-old Cynthia Oguzie, who was reportedly killed when an overhead water tank collapsed onto her apartment in the Lekki area of the state.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Safety Commission, Adewunmi Okoh, confirmed the development to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday during an interview about the heartbreaking incident.
Ekwutosblog reported on Wednesday that a short video viewed by our correspondent showed the victim lying motionless on her bed. However, a woman in the background could be heard insisting that she was still alive.
Another video captured the collapsed water tank and the wreckage of the building, while additional photos showed Cynthia Oguzie’s lifeless body in what appeared to be a hospital setting.
Oguzie had reportedly moved into the Lekki apartment just two months before the tragic incident.
A Facebook user who identified himself as the victim’s brother, Chukwuebuka Nathaniel, shared details of the incident on his page, blaming the tragedy on substandard construction.
“Beware of Lekki buildings and their water stands,” he wrote.
“This is how they sent my sister to her early grave. Thank you, so-called Lekki landlord, and your engineer, for doing this type of water stand,” he added.
Reacting to the incident, Mrs Okoh told our correspondent that the commission’s investigative team was prepared to be deployed to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation.
To facilitate the process, she urged the deceased’s brother to provide the exact address of the building, noting that it would help the commission trace those responsible for the tragic incident.
“We need details of the incident. We will escalate the matter to the DG. And the officers in charge will take the matter over. They will investigate the incident,” Okoh informed Ekwutosblog.
The commission, which was established to uphold public safety, has investigated several similar incidents in the past, including the case of a young man who died after jumping into a melting pot and has issued sanctions upon the completion of such probes.
Meanwhile, efforts by our correspondent to reach the bereaved brother, Nathaniel, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to him on Facebook had not been responded to as of the time this report was filed.

Public Procurement is a strategic enabler of national development, which contributes to economic growth through transparency, accountability, and efficient management of public resources.
The Director-General, Bureau of Public Procurement, Dr. Adebowale A. Adedokun, MCIPS, ACFE, stated this at the opening ceremony of the Procurement Clinic for all Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), at the UBEC Digital Resource Centre Abuja, on the Principles of procurement planning, Records keeping and E-Advertisement; A 2-day workshop for procurement officers, organized by the Bureau of Public Procurement to improve public procurement practices in Nigeria and ensure its alignment with international best standards.
Dr. Adebowale, in his remarks, appreciated His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for the opportunity given to the Bureau to carry out this scheme of procurement training. He acknowledged the management team as well as the organizers for their painstaking efforts to see that the program is well organized.
The DG reiterated the mandate of BPP under section 5 (k) of the Public Procurement Act (PPA) 2007, tasked with organizing training and development programs for procurement professionals.
Adding that, the essence of the training is designed to empower procurement officers with the necessary skills and knowledge to discharge their duties effectively. It is a platform for learning, collaboration, and reform.
He emphasized on the principles of procurement planning, which ensures that procurement activities are strategically aligned with organizational goals and, by extension, Mr. President’s “Renewed Hope Agenda”. Pointing out the need for proper documentation; the use of E-Advertisement Module for leveraging technology to enhance competition, transparency and access to public procurement opportunities; the use of Nigeria Open Contracting Portal (NOCOPO) for uploading procurement information and the efficient use of the New Revised Standard Bidding Document.
The DG reminded the participants and all procurement officers that Procurement in Nigeria has taken a paradigm shift, as transactional procurement is no longer viable, and BPP would not condone any infraction against this policy. BPP is strengthening its relationship with some of the Anti-Graft Agencies like ICPC, EFCC, NEITI, Code of Conduct Bureau, and NFIU through effective corruption free mechanisms
Therefore, all procurement practitioners should play a pivotal role in procurement processes to ensure that public funds are utilized effectively to deliver impactful services to the citizens. He encouraged everyone to use this golden opportunity to explore innovative ideas that will strengthen our collective resolves in upholding the principles of transparency, accountability, and professionalism.
