In a surprising turn of events, President Joe Biden announced on social media on Sunday that he will not seek reelection in 2024, effectively becoming a one-term president.

The announcement comes as Biden recuperates from his third battle with COVID-19 at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Shortly after his initial announcement, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee to run against former President Donald Trump, the Republican party’s nominee for the third consecutive election.

Harris, if accepted by the party, would become the first Black woman and South Asian major party presidential nominee in U.S. history.

Following Biden’s announcement, Trump and other Republicans quickly criticized Biden and Harris.

Trump stated, “Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was!” He also remarked that Harris would be easier to beat than Biden.

House Speaker Mike Johnson called for Biden to resign immediately, asserting that if Biden is unfit to run for another term, he is also unfit to remain president until January 20, 2025.

Should Biden resign, Harris would be sworn in as the 47th president.
