Yesterday, my bill for the conversion of Michael Okpara University, Umudike, into a conventional university passed its second reading.

This bill, seeks to transform the existing Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State into a conventional university to expand its institutional mandate.

As an institution primarily focused on agricultural sciences, MOUAU has already contributed significantly to Nigeria’s agricultural development. However, broadening the university’s scope to include diverse disciplines would amplify its impact across multiple sectors.

With this bill becoming law, Michael Okpara University will be able to introduce programs in fields such as Arts, Medicine, Law, Social Sciences, and Humanities. This diversification will attract a larger and more varied student population, ensuring that MOUAU becomes a hub for learners from different academic and cultural backgrounds.

I am confident that, with the support of my colleagues, this bill will receive the necessary legislative approval and contribute to the advancement of our educational system, not just in Abia State but our nation at large. Deputy speaker Benjamin Kalu Says.
