The Nigerian government has expressed concerns over the labour unions’ demand to increase the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N494,000, citing economic risks. The government warns that such an increase would lead to a massive annual wage bill of N9.5 trillion, destabilizing the economy and jeopardizing the welfare of over 200 million Nigerians.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, urged the labour unions to reconsider their demands and return to the negotiating table for a more realistic and sustainable agreement. The government remains committed to ensuring fair remuneration for workers while preventing massive job losses in the private sector.
