BREAKING: Nigerian Police File New Cybercrime Charges Against Dele Farotimi

The Nigerian Police have filed fresh cybercrime charges against activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi. Stay updated on the latest legal developments in this high-profile case.

The Nigerian Police have brought new cybercrime charges against Dele Farotimi, a detained human rights lawyer.

On Friday, December 6, 2024, an extra charge consisting of twelve counts was filed before a Federal High Court convening in Ado-Ekiti.

This development comes after the Police filed 16 charges against the lawyer on Wednesday.

Reports indicate that the human rights lawyer was arrested in Lagos on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, by officers from the Ekiti State Police Command.

The next day, he faced arraignment in a magistrate court in Ado-Ekiti on 16 charges of defamation against Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Afe Babalola. The allegations stemmed from statements made about Babalola in his book titled “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.”

In his decision, Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun ordered Farotimi to remain in prison custody until December 10.

In the new charges, Farotimi is alleged to have made defamatory statements on Seun Okinbaloye’s podcast, drawing from his book titled “Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.”

He faced allegations of intimidating and disparaging Afe Babalola during the podcast.

The lawyer faced charges for revealing details of the legal actions against him during a press conference on December 2, 2024, prior to his arrest on December 3, 2024.
