Renowned Nigerian comedian and actor Ali Baba shared a harrowing experience with former military leader Gen. Sani Abacha on the Leadership Podcast with Stephen Akintayo. He described the incident as a “near-death experience” during Abacha’s presidency.
At an Abuja event, Ali Baba was tasked with introducing the Akwa Ibom cultural group. Noticing Abacha wearing sunglasses indoors, he boldly requested the president remove them, saying, “Your Excellency, it’s almost 10; don’t you want to see their performance?”
Abacha obliged, but tension escalated as DSS officers approached backstage. Fearing arrest, Ali Baba opted to sit beside Abacha instead of returning backstage.
“He made jokes about me, asking why I refused to go backstage. I replied, ‘Don’t worry, sir, they can arrest me here,'” Ali Baba recounted.
