Customs Kano/Jigawa Command Attributes Success in Arrests, Seizures to Collaboration
…Highlights Growing Threat of Wildlife Trafficking
The Kano/Jigawa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has credited its recent success in arrests and seizures to its partnership with the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC).
In a joint operation, the NCS Kano/Jigawa Command and the WJC seized 2,179 kilograms of pangolin scales and arrested a suspect in Mubi, Adamawa State.
According to a press release issued on Tuesday, 17 December 2024, by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Customs Saidu Nurudeen, the operation—supported by the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone D—marks the third major seizure of pangolin scales by the NCS and WJC in 2024.
“The massive haul of 2,179 kilograms of pangolin scales seized in Mubi on 5 December 2024 highlights the growing threat of wildlife trafficking in the region,” the statement reads. “This success underscores the importance of the collaboration between the NCS and WJC, which has been dismantling smuggling networks and protecting endangered species since 2021.”
Nurudeen revealed that 21,582 kilograms of pangolin scales have been confiscated nationwide since the partnership began, with 11,673.2 kilograms seized in 2024 alone. Of this, 4,473.2 kilograms were attributed to the efforts of the Kano/Jigawa Command.
The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Comptroller Dauda Chana, praised the bravery and professionalism of officers involved in the operations, as well as the expertise provided by the WJC. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating the trafficking of endangered species and other prohibited goods.
