US President-elect, Donald Trump is Time magazine’s 2024 ‘Person of the Year.’
This is the second time the 78-year-old has been named Person of the Year after he also received the title in 2016 after his first presidential election victory.
The magazine made its annual announcement on Thursday, December 12, after releasing its shortlist which included Trump and
Kamala Harris, Elon Musk, Princess Kate Middleton, Jerome Powell, Claudia Sheinbaum, Yulia Navalnaya, Joe Rogan, Benjamin Netanyahu and Mark Zuckerberg.
It comes after Trump dominated headlines this year with his third bid for the White House and his victory last month.
The president-elect also survived a close assassination attempt in July and became the first U.S. president convicted of a crime in May.
Trump joins thirteen other U.S. presidents who have been named Person of the Year including most recently President Biden who received the title in 2020.
The magazine’s tradition, which started in 1927 as “Man of the Year” recognises a person or movement that “for better or for worse… has done the most to influence the events of the year”.
Other previous winners include climate change activist Greta Thunberg, former President Barack Obama, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Pope Francis, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
