CAIRO (Reuters) -Dozens of Palestinians were killed or injured in an Israeli strike on a multi-storey residential building in northern Gaza’s Beit Lahiya on Sunday, medics told Reuters.

There was no immediate figure for how many people were killed. The Palestinian Civil Emergency said around 70 people have lived in the property.

The Hamas-run Gaza government media office put the number of those killed at 72. The building housed members of at least six families, medics and residents said.

There was no immediate comment from Israel. It has often accused the Hamas media office of exaggerating the number of fatalities.

Video footage of the strike site obtained by Reuters showed locals pulling bodies from a huge pile of rubble, with surrounding houses also damaged, some heavily.

The Israeli army sent tanks into Beit Lahiya and the nearby towns of Beit Hanoun and Jabalia, the largest of the Gaza Strip’s eight historic refugee camps, last month in what it said was a campaign to fight Hamas militants waging attacks and prevent them from regrouping.

It said it has killed hundreds of militants in those three areas, which residents said Israeli forces had isolated from Gaza City.

A statement by the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad, an ally of Hamas, on Sunday said fighters blew up an Israeli army vehicle during fighting in Beit Lahiya. There was no immediate comment from Israel on the claim.

Earlier in the day, an Israeli air strike killed at least 10 people in the Bureij camp in the central Gaza Strip, when a missile hit a house, medics said. Four other people were killed in the nearby Nuseirat camp, they added.

Qatar has told Hamas and Israel it will stall its efforts to mediate a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal until they show “willingness and seriousness” to resume talks.

The two warring sides continue to trade blame. Hamas wants a deal that ends the war, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the war can only end once Hamas is eradicated.

The Gaza health ministry said 43,800 people have been confirmed dead since Oct. 7, 2023. Hamas militants killed around 1,200 Israelis that day, and still hold dozens of some 250 hostages they took back to Gaza, according to Israeli tallies.

Ukrainian Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, denounced that the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant was “on the verge of a blackout” due to a new Russian attack in the vicinity.

Although Russia retains control of the plant, the minister said the attack had cut off one of the plant’s two main power supply lines.

Disconnecting the other line would suspend operations, jeopardize safe operating conditions and increase the risk of accidents, the minister warned in a message on his Telegram account.

“Such actions by the aggressor country pose a threat to the radiological safety of the entire region, and the return of control of the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant to Ukraine can guarantee its safe operation,” he added.

No comment from Moscow, but in this kind of situation it usually accuses Ukrainian forces of bombing the plant in an attempt to regain control by force. One thing is certain: the situation around the plant is extremely unstable. A few months ago, the International Atomic Energy Agency had already warned of the risk of a major incident.

Mikati discussed the proposal with Ali Larijani, the senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei, in Beirut on Friday.

The caretaker prime minister said the Lebanese government wants the war to end and resolution 1701 to be implemented ”in all its details,” according to a statement on the talks issued by his office.

A Lebanese official confirmed that Beirut has received a copy of a draft proposal based on UN Security Council resolution 1701, which ended the last Israel-Hezbollah war in 2006.

Hezbollah officials are said to be studying the draft.

According to Lebanese media, US Ambassador to Lebanon Lisa Johnson gave a draft proposal to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri who has been leading the talks representing Hezbollah.

After meeting Mikati and Berri, Larijani said the main purpose of his visit was ”to loudly say that we will stand by Lebanon’s government and people.”

Asked if he was trying to thwart US ceasefire mediation, Larijani said, ”We are not trying to blow up any effort, but we want to solve the problem and we will stand by Lebanon, whatever the circumstances.”

Iranian support critical to Hezbollah’s military power

Iran is a main backer of Hezbollah and for decades has been funding and arming the Lebanese militant group.

Hezbollah began firing rockets into northern Israel the day after Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on 7 October last year which ignited the war in Gaza, prompting exchanges between the two sides ever since.

An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day, and more than 200 were taken hostage.

Israel escalated its strikes in Lebanon in late September, vowing to cripple Hezbollah and end its barrages in Israel, and launched a ground operation into the country.

More than 3,400 people have been killed in Lebanon by Israeli fire – 80% of them in the past month – according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.
