Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu Makes History As First African President-Elect Of UICC

The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) has announced the election of Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu as its president-elect for the term 2024-2026.

This historic appointment makes her the first African to hold the position.

The decision was made during the UICC General Assembly, held virtually on October 8, 2024, where full member organizations around the world participated in the election.

This reflects UICC’s commitment to fostering collaboration within the global cancer community.

Dr. Bagudu, a consultant pediatrician and founder of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation, is recognized as a leading advocate in the fight against cancer in Nigeria.

She holds positions in several organizations, including the Nigerian Cancer Society and the American Society for Clinical Oncology.

As chairperson of First Ladies Against Cancer and co-chair of Nigeria’s cervical cancer technical working group, she has played a crucial role in raising awareness and improving cancer care.

Dr. Shinkafi-Bagudu will officially take on her role at the UICC in 2026, with high expectations for her impact on cancer care worldwide.
