The Federal Government has announced the arrest of 10 individuals on Interpol’s watch list within one week, underscoring its renewed commitment to border security and immigration reforms.
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, announced this on Tuesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Technology Innovation Complex by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
“Over the past week, 10 individuals flagged on the Interpol and immigration wanted lists were apprehended while attempting to enter Nigeria,” the minister stated. “Under this new leadership, Nigeria has become a no-go area for criminal elements.”
The newly commissioned complex is equipped with cutting-edge surveillance technology to detect irregular migration patterns, assess risk levels of travelers, and monitor unmanned borders across the nation.
The minister highlighted the sustainability features of the project, including a 0.5KW solar power plant designed to cut costs and save Nigeria over N300 million annually.
Additionally, he revealed that 250 officers have been trained to ensure round-the-clock surveillance.
President Tinubu lauded the NIS for leveraging technology to enhance national security, citing the arrest of the 10 suspects as a direct outcome of the new system.
The facility features advanced amenities, including a command and control center for migration, a data center, the production of ECOWAS biometric cards, and an automated visa system that enables approvals within 48 hours.
