Nigerian musician Chinedu Okoli, known professionally as Flavour N’abania, has commented on the recent sentencing of Courage Ipaka, who was convicted by the Federal High Court in Lagos for impersonating him and swindling an American woman, Yvelte M. Thompson, out of $53,000.
According to reports, Justice Dehinde Dipeolu convicted Ipaka on Tuesday, September 3, after he admitted to the two-count charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The prosecution was led by counsel Suleiman Suleiman, who presented evidence through EFCC investigator Azibagiri Dan Ekpar.
During the trial, Ekpar testified that Ipaka pretended to be Flavour by promising to arrange concerts in the United States and receiving payments via his Bitcoin wallets. The EFCC discovered the scam after receiving a complaint from Eyitayo Tolulope Abiodun and others on behalf of the victim.
Following Ipaka’s guilty plea and after reviewing the evidence, Justice Dipeolu sentenced him to two years in prison with the option of a N2 million fine. The judge also ordered the forfeiture of the recovered N7.9 million to Mrs. Thompson.
Reacting to the news on his social media platform, Flavour shared a photo of the impersonator and wrote, “One down. Ndi uchu!”.
