A highly anticipated biographical film, “Funmilayo Ransome Kuti,” is scheduled for nationwide release on May 17, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The film, which gained attention after being selected for screening at the 12th Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFG) in 2023, has garnered further recognition with nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Writing Movie at the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) in 2024.
Penned by Tunde Babalola and directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the movie delves into the life of Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, a prominent figure in Nigerian history known for her activism, education, and leadership.
It chronicles her journey from her days at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage to Isreal Ransome-Kuti, while also spotlighting her pivotal role in advocating against colonialism and patriarchy through the establishment of the Abeokuta’s Women’s Union.
Featuring a stellar cast including Kehinde Bankole, Ajoke Silva, Adunni Ade, and other talented actors, the film notably includes appearances by Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s grandchildren, Femi Kuti and Yeni Kuti, adding a personal touch to the portrayal of the late icon’s life.
