As part of the state government’s efforts to enhance electricity regulation and access, Governor Mallam Umar Namadi today, at the Council Chambers, formally assented to the Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission law.
The legislation, which was recently passed by the Jigawa State House of Assembly, establishes the Jigawa State Electricity Regulatory Commission. Its mandate includes overseeing electricity generation, transmission, system operation, distribution, and supply in the state.
The law aims to enhance electricity access for residents of Jigawa State while fostering an environment conducive to private sector investment in the power industry.
It also emphasizes the importance of collaboration through public-private partnerships to improve energy infrastructure and service delivery.
Additionally, the law supports the development of diverse electricity solutions, including grid, mini-grid, and off-grid systems, utilizing both renewable and non-renewable energy sources to meet the state’s growing energy demands.
Governor Namadi reiterated this administration’s commitment to addressing the state’s energy needs, which is a sine qua non to the development of Jigawa State.
“This law is a vital step towards sustainable development and economic growth in Jigawa State. By strengthening electricity regulation and promoting innovative energy solutions, we aim to create a more reliable and inclusive energy ecosystem for our people.”
This development is expected to improve electricity availability and stimulate economic growth across Jigawa State.
It will be recalled that the Umar Namadi administration, earlier this year, and for the first time in the history of Jigawa State, created the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy with Dr. Sirajo Musa as the pioneer commissioner in the ministry. At the same time, he also hinted at the establishment of a new regulatory body, under the supervision of the same Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy, to regulate the distribution and transmission of electricity within the state.
