British actor Idris Elba has announced plans to relocate to Africa within the next decade to support the continent’s growing film industry.
Speaking at a film industry event in Ghana, the London-born star, who has Ghanaian and Sierra Leonean roots, revealed his vision to help strengthen local filmmaking through long-term projects, including the establishment of film studios in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and Accra, Ghana.
Elba emphasized the need to live in Africa to actively contribute to the industry’s growth, stating, “I’m here to bolster the film industry, that is a 10-year process. I won’t be able to do that from overseas.”
The actor also expressed a desire to correct misconceptions about Africa, often portrayed through narratives of trauma and colonization, by promoting authentic stories that highlight the richness of African culture, traditions, and diversity.
Elba further mentioned that he will divide his time between different African countries, including Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania, to immerse himself in the diverse storytelling landscapes across the continent.
