Governor Hope Uzodimma’s strong advocacy for the Charter of Equity (CoE) in Imo State has gained substantial momentum following his recent Supreme Court victory on the gubernatorial election of November 11, 2023.

The Charter of Equity aims to ensure fair representation across the state’s three senatorial zones—Owerri, Orlu, and Okigwe—and Uzodimma’s victory has significantly reinforced this principle.

As the Imo Local Government Elections approach on September 21, 2024, members of the APC who had previously dismissed the importance of zoning are now reconsidering their positions.

Uzodimma’s Supreme Court triumph has underscored the significance of the Charter of Equity, positioning it as a crucial factor in the forthcoming elections.

During a celebration of his Supreme Court victory at the Imo Government House in Owerri on August 25, 2024, Uzodimma expressed his gratitude to the judiciary and divine providence for affirming his governorship.

He also voiced concerns about the upcoming local government elections, criticizing aspirants who, despite knowing they did not qualify under the current zoning guidelines, purchased nomination forms.

Uzodimma remarked, “If you are aware that it is not your area’s turn to hold a position and you still proceed to purchase a form, that act alone disqualifies you. The Shared Prosperity Administration under my leadership firmly upholds the zoning arrangement.”

He further emphasized that any form of oath swearing or deceitful practices would not be tolerated under his administration.

Addressing a gathering of Imo citizens at the Banquet Hall, Uzodimma reiterated his commitment to the Charter of Equity, asserting that Imo State will serve as a model for equitable elections throughout the South East and Nigeria.

With Uzodimma’s firm stance, it is now evident that the next gubernatorial election in Imo State, expected in 2027 or 2028, will necessitate a successor from the Owerri Zone, in alignment with the established zoning arrangement.

Consequently, it is imperative for the Owerri Zone to begin preparations to identify and support a suitable successor for Uzodimma in the upcoming election cycle.

The pivotal  remains: Can the people of Owerri Zone unite as a cohesive entity with a singular voice by that time?
