It is essential for the media and civil society organizations to assist in uncovering how fraud is being committed at NNPCL, according to Nigeria’s Senior Lawyer.
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has stated that an investigation into the “fuel importation scandal” is crucial and overdue.
“It is time to investigate the fraud associated with the importation of goods,” he declared in an interview with Channels TV’s Sunday Politics program.
“I am not referring to the absurdities occurring in the National Assembly. The media and civil society organizations must collaborate to expose this fraud happening in Nigeria.”
Reports indicate that the $6 billion debt owed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to fuel suppliers has exacerbated the fuel shortage in Nigeria.Last Sunday, the NNPCL approved a “massive debt to fuel suppliers,”
stating that it threatens the sustainability of fuel supply. The increase in fuel queues poses a significant threat to Nigeria, according to Falana.
The Senior Lawyer also noted that “there is no complete information from the government” regarding fuel subsidies. He criticized that Nigeria cannot afford to spend $2.9 billion to repair its refineries given the current debt situation.
