Israel has begun commemorating the first anniversary of the devastating October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas, which claimed over 1,200 lives.

Vigils and rallies were held on Monday at massacre sites, with a focus on calling for the return of hostages still held by the militant group.

The ceremonies commenced with President Isaac Herzog observing a moment of silence at 6:29 a.m. at Kibbutz Reim, this location was where the Nova music festival took place, and 370 people lost their lives to Hamas fighters.

Global events also took place, honoring the victims of the attack while raising support for Palestinians affected by the ongoing war in Gaza.

The conflict has intensified over the past year, with Israel continuing its military campaign in Gaza and fighting in Lebanon against Hezbollah, a Hamas ally.

The attack on October 7, 2023, left 1,205 people dead, primarily civilians, and led to the capture of 251 hostages by Hamas, 97 of whom remain in captivity.

During a temporary truce in late November 2023, 105 hostages were released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

As Israel continues its fight against Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated his commitment to achieving victory, vowing to destroy the militant group.

However, Hamas fighters have regrouped in several areas, prolonging the conflict.
