As the #endbadgovernment movements began across the country on August 1, 2024, there have been reports of confrontations between law enforcement and local troublemakers in various states, including Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Borno, and others.

In Abuja, a small group of protesters at Eagles Square were subjected to teargas by the police, despite the approved venue being the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. According to The Nation, police attempted to disperse the protesters by firing tear gas canisters into the air. However, the resolute protesters continued their march.

Protesters at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State were also dispersed using tear gas canisters. The reports of tear gas usage triggered widespread reactions and outrage on social media.

Actress Iyabo Ojo took to Instagram on August 1, 2024, to denounce the actions. In a series of posts showcasing the violence, she called on President Tinubu and the police to permit the protesters to proceed peacefully.

In one post, she wrote, “Why are they using teargas? 🤷‍♀️@nigeriapoliceforce #peacefulprotest is their right.

“@officialasiwajubat, please, sir, kindly instruct your officers to exercise caution. Allow a peaceful protest. Thank you. #peacefulprotest is their right,” she wrote, appealing to President Tinubu.

In another post, she said, “But why? It’s a #peacefulprotest for goodness’ sake & it’s their right.”
