Ekwutosblog learns that James Harrison, the Australian blood donor known as the “Man with the Golden Arm,” has passed away at 88. Harrison’s rare plasma, rich in Anti-D antibodies, helped prevent hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDFN), saving an estimated 2.4 million babies.
Harrison began donating at 18 after receiving life-saving blood at 14. Over six decades, he donated plasma 1,173 times, earning him the Medal of the Order of Australia. He retired in 2018 due to donor age limits.
His daughter, Tracey Mellowship, shared that even her own children benefited from his rare blood. Harrison’s legacy continues to inspire blood donation efforts worldwide.
