Nigeria’s Matthew Kuti and Hope Udoaka, medalists at the African Games, exhibited exceptional prowess against seasoned opponents, asserting their dominance as they clinched the title of West African champions at the 2024 ITTF West Africa Regional Championships in Lomé, Togo, concluded over the weekend.
Although he didn’t perform at his peak during the team event, leading to Togo usurping Nigeria as the regional champions, Kuti showcased flawless skill in the singles event. In the final match, he defeated several seasoned players, notably clinching victory against the former regional champion, Oba Kizito of Ivory Coast.
Beginning his journey in a group where he was defeated by Benin Republic’s Kossi Akakpo, Kuti advanced to the knockout stage, determined to rectify his team’s mistake.
In the round of 16, he defeated Togo’s national champion, Kokou Fanny, with a 3-0 scoreline, securing his spot in the quarterfinals. There, he triumphed over his compatriot, Matthew Fabunmi, with a 4-2 victory, paving the way for a semi-final showdown against the player who had previously bested him in the team event, Mawussi Agbetoglo of Togo.
