Labour Party to Court: Reps’ Defection to APC Sparks Legal Action
The Labour Party prepares legal measures against Representatives who defected to the APC, challenging their actions as a breach of party loyalty and law.
The Labour Party has announced its intention to initiate legal proceedings against four of its members in the House of Representatives who have switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The members in question are Chinedu Okere, Mathew Donatus, Akiba Bassey, and Esosa Iyawe.
This defection was disclosed by the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, who attributed it to an “internal crisis” within the Labour Party.
In response, party spokesman Obiora Ifoh emphasized that no individual has the authority to abandon the party’s mandate.
He stated that while the Labour Party remains resolute in the face of this defection, it will not overlook the situation and has directed its legal team to take action against the defectors and to pursue the recovery of its mandates in accordance with the 1999 Constitution and the amended 2022 Electoral Act.
Ifoh asserted that there is a prevailing sense of stability within the Labour Party, asserting that no elected member can legally defect while retaining the party’s mandate.
