Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have apprehended Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu on charges of conspiracy and child trafficking.

The suspects were detained by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division at Berger bus stop, a key entry point into Lagos State, following a tip-off from a Good Samaritan.

They were found in possession of two newborn baby girls, approximately six days old, while traveling from Abia State on September 9, 2024.

Investigations revealed that the suspects intended to deliver the infants to a nurse in Lagos State. The arrangement was made by the babies’ mother, who promised to connect them with the nurse upon their arrival in Lagos.

During interrogation, the suspects admitted to the crime, disclosing that they were paid ₦150,000 for transporting the babies to Lagos. They further revealed that the mother sold the babies due to her inability to care for them.

According to Lagos state police public relations officer Benjamin Hundeyin, the case has been transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command. The newborns have been placed in the custody of a motherless baby’s home for proper care and medical evaluation.

As investigations continue to apprehend other conspirators, the arrested suspects were arraigned on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
