By Dan Opara

A viral trend on various social media platforms has sparked speculation that numerous prominent figures and political heavyweights from different political parties in Imo State of Nigeria, are finalizing their plans to defect to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

According to the circulating reports, some of the notable names allegedly preparing to join APGA includes:

Hon. Matthew Nwogu, a serving member of the Labour Party (LP), currently representing Aboh-Mbaise/Ngor-Okpala Federal Constituency at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, former Action Alliance (AA) governorship candidate in the 2019 Imo gubernatorial election, now a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Rt.Hon. Barr. Uche Onyeagucha, a former House of Representatives member for Owerri Federal Constituency, former Secretary to the Government of Imo State, and a former Owerri Zone Senatorial candidate under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Sen. Ifeanyi Godwin Araraume, former Senator who represented Imo North (Okigwe Zone Senatorial District), a multiple-time governorship candidate under PDP and then in APGA, now in APC.

These high-profile politicians, along with many others, are rumored to be on the verge of defecting to APGA, stirring intense political discussions across the state.

In line with professional journalistic ethics and fact-finding, ThePressman Newspaper reached out to Ekwutosblog and other relevant sources for verification of this alleged political realignment.

Speaking exclusively to ThePressman Newspaper, via in a telephone phone, the present Imo APGA State Party Chairman, Chief John Iwuala, addressed the speculation and provided insight into the unfolding political scenario.

Hear him, “A lot of people are seriously warming up to join our party, Imo APGA, including many of our aggrieved members—both those we offended and those who offended us,” Chief Iwuala stated.

He further revealed that members from both factions of APGA—the Chief Victor Oye-led faction and the now-defunct faction under Chief Edozie Njoku—have finalized their plans to peaceful return to APGA, following the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the authentic leadership of the party.

“The lately last year’s Supreme Court judgment on the leadership of APGA has restored confidence in the true APGA;

“In Imo State, numerous prominent political figures are planning their return to the party;

“As the Imo APGA State Chairman, alongside my executive members, we are fully prepared and eager to welcome all new entrants,” he affirmed.

Chief Iwuala disclosed that APGA is experiencing a significant influx of new members across all 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State.

He clarified that party registration is not conducted at the state office but is ongoing at the ward and local government levels.

“Our records show that massive registration is taking place at the grassroots level. This exercise is being carried out discreetly,” he noted.

The APGA chairman also referenced the recent Supreme Court ruling, which imposed a ₦60 million fine on Chief Edozie Njoku and his crippled faction, labeling them as impostors.

This legal victory, he said, has further strengthened APGA and encouraged more political heavyweights to join the party.

“With this judgment, many notable politicians have regained faith in APGA. What we are witnessing now is a process of political alignment and realignment. We are strategically preparing to take over governance in Imo State come 2027,” he emphasized.

Looking ahead, Chief Iwuala expressed confidence in APGA’s growing political strength in Imo State.

He stated that the party is undergoing a “political tsunami,” attracting respected politicians from across all 27 LGAs in preparation for the 2027 governorship election.

“We are not in a hurry to blow our trumpets, but in due time, the people of Imo State will be informed of the direction to follow to the Imo Seat of Power—Douglas House—come 2027,” he concluded.

As political realignments intensify in Imo State, the rumored mass defection to APGA signals a significant shift ahead of the 2027 elections.

While time will reveal the authenticity of these claims, one thing remains certain—Imo APGA is gaining momentum, and the political landscape is rapidly evolving.

In a fresh development on Sunday, about 300 delegates of the Accord Party from across Osun State elected Bamigbola as the factional candidate during a primary held at Regina Suite, Osogbo.

Bamigbola emerged through a voice vote conducted by the delegates, after which the Chairman of the Primary Committee, Hon. Olufemi Ogundare, declared him the party’s candidate for the 2026 Osun State governorship election.

Ewhrudjakpo reportedly collapsed in his office on Thursday and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
