- Passengers on a flight to Los Angeles were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime journey that seemed to travel back in time
- Their jetliner departed from Hong Kong on January 1, 2025, and crossed the International Date Line after six hours, reversing the calendar by a day
- Cathay Pacific Flight 880 touched down at LAX on December 31, 2024, at about 8:30 pm, a day before their departure date
In a journey that appeared to defy the laws of time, Cathay Pacific Flight 880 departed from Hong Kong on January 1, 2025 and landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on New Year’s Eve 2024.
ABC News reports that the flight took off from Hong Kong International Airport just after midnight on January 1, 2025.
How Cathay Pacific Flight 880 travelled back in time
Traversing the vast Pacific Ocean, the jetliner crossed the International Date Line about halfway through its 12-hour journey.
The crossing reversed the calendar by a day, allowing the plane to arrive in Los Angeles on December 31, 2024.
The flight touched down at LAX shortly before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, approximately 20 minutes ahead of schedule.
Passengers onboard effectively celebrated New Year’s Day twice, a rare temporal experience made possible by the interplay of time zones and international aviation.
Passengers love trans-Pacific flights to travel “back in time”
Passengers arriving at LAX were greeted with the festive hustle of New Year’s Eve celebrations, providing a unique end to their long-haul flight.
New York Post adds that this time-bending phenomenon is a regular occurrence for eastbound transpacific flights.
Over the years, passengers have been known to book eastbound trans-Pacific flights across New Year’s Eve to experience the holiday twice.
It highlights the fascinating quirks of global timekeeping, where a combination of speed, distance, and the International Date Line can seemingly transport passengers “back in time.”
December was dark month for airline industry
The drama-free Cathay Pacific flight gives a new lease of life to an airline industry that had a difficult ending in 2024.
In one of the worst airline disasters in recent times, nearly all 181 onboard Jeju Air Flight 7C 2216 died after it crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea.
Only two crew members miraculously survived and were rescued from the Boeing 737-800’s tail section.

FACT CHECK: No Office of the NSA Vehicle Was Stolen

Contrary to widespread reports last week, no vehicle belonging to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) was stolen in Abuja.
Here’s the real story: the Hilux in question—a visibly aged model—was no longer an official vehicle of the ONSA. It had been sold through an internal government auction over two years ago to a staff member, in line with standard asset disposal procedures common across MDAs.
The confusion arose when the said staff, now the legal owner of the vehicle, parked it along a street in the Central Area of Abuja to attend Friday congregational prayers. Unfortunately, it was at this point the vehicle was stolen—an incident that has now been grossly misreported as a security breach involving the NSA’s office.
Government agencies routinely auction aging or unserviceable assets as part of their internal asset management processes. In this case, the vehicle had long ceased to be part of the NSA’s fleet.
So, let’s set the record straight: No breach. No security scare. No stolen government vehicle. Just a private incident—mislabeled and misreported.

The Edo State Police Command said another set of four hunters from Kano State were intercepted by operatives of the Edo Security Network with arms and ammunition when they arrived in the state.
In a statement by its Public Relations Officer, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the statement became necessary in order to dispel the misinformation circulating on social media that four herdsmen armed with guns were arrested at a hotel in the state and handed over to the police.
According to the statement, contrary to the report, those apprehended were hunters, not herdsmen.
The statement named the suspects as Yusuf Abdulkarim, Mujaheed Garba, Shittu Idris, and Jamilu Habibu.
It said items recovered from them included three Dane guns, six empty cartridges, three half-filled cartridges, four cutlasses, and two daggers.
“The Edo State Police Command is aware of misinformation circulating on social media that four herdsmen armed with guns were arrested at Americanus Hotel on Osemwenkhae Street, after Big Joe Motors, Ramat Park, Orogbeni Quarters, and handed over to the police.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that they are hunters, not herdsmen. They are from Doguwa in Kano State, heading to Uvbe community in Orhionwon Local Government Area of Edo State. Meanwhile, an investigation is ongoing.”
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, wishes to use this opportunity to discourage residents of the state from circulating wrong information capable of causing unnecessary tension.
