Amid ongoing leadership disputes among various factions within the Labour Party (LP) in Cross River State, the defection of Brian Odey — who represents Yala state constituency 1 in the House of Assembly — has inflicted yet another significant setback on the embattled party.

Over the weekend, the leaders of the state’s ruling party, APC, formally welcomed Brian Odey and other defectors at a grand event.

Odey became a member of the APC in Yahe Ward, located within Yala LGA.

Both groups, headed by Ogar Osim and John Ushie respectively, informed the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) of their readiness to present candidates for the upcoming Council elections scheduled on October 25, 2024.

Another lawmaker, Martins Achadu, who represents the Yala 2 State Constituency, was also welcomed to the APC. He officially defected at Ijiraga ward.

Upon receiving them, the Speaker of the Assembly, Elvert Ayambem, characterized their move as a strategic decision for the APC. He highlighted that both individuals are experienced lawmakers who are passionate about serving their constituencies.

“The Speaker remarked, ‘Brian’s arrival is not just a personal joy for me; it also signifies a victory for the APC. His dedication and commitment to his constituents will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and success of our party.'”
